Site FAQ: Email Notification Settings

There are several settings that come into play with email notifications coming from the ASP.NET forums:

Edit Profile (http://forums.asp.net/user/EditProfile.aspx)

1. Receive Emails: [ ] Yes [ ] No - This is the master email switch. Setting this to [ ] No will prevent ALL forums-related emails from being sent to you, including password reset emails (if you find yourself in that situation, please use the site's Contact form to request password reset assistance). Setting this back to [ ] Yes will allow emails to once again be sent to you. This setting could be handy if you will be away from the ASP.NET Forums for a while and are not interested in receiving emails from the site while you are away.

2. Receive rich (HTML) emails [ ] Yes [ ] No - This affects only the format in which emails are sent. It has no bearing on whether or not emails are sent. If [ ] No is chosen, the email will be sent in plain text.

3. Enable Email Notifications of forum/thread subscriptions and replies to my posts. [ ] Yes [ ] No - This is the default value of thread subscriptions. This value is checked only at the time of your first post to a thread, and the thread subscription is set to this value. Changing this value has no effect on any existing thread subscriptions. To discontinue (or start) receiving email notifications for a particular thread, see #5 below.

4. Private Email - This is the email address to which all email notifications will be sent. This email address must be unique in the membership - if you attempt to change it to an email address associated with another user, you will receive an error.

5. Email Subscription Enabled / Email Subscription Disabled - This is a toggle button; clicking the button changes its value. If "Enabled", you will receive email notifications whenever a new post is made to this thread, even when you are the post's author. If "Disabled", you will not receive email notifications whenever a new post is made to this thread, unless you are subscribed to the forum in which this thread was posted (see #6 - 8 below). When first posting to a thread, either in a thread-starting post or a reply, the initial value comes from the Enable Email Notifications of forum/thread subscriptions and replies to my posts setting in your profile (see #3 above).

Note: You will need to scroll to the bottom of the particular forum's landing page to find the "More Options" button and make updates to your forum subscription

6. More Options - Click this button to open the "Sorting and Notifications" panel.

7. Send Email - There are 3 options in this dropdown:

never - This is the default value. If this value is selected, you will not receive email notifications when there is activity in this forum (unless you have subscribed to a thread (see #5 above).
when new topics are posted in this forum - If this value is selected, you will receive an email notification whenever a new thread is started in this specific forum. Note that the email volume could be large for some forums.
when new posts are posted in this forum - If this value is selected, you will receive an email notification whenever a new thread is started in this forum, and whenever there is a new reply. Essentially you will receive an email notification for every new post in this specific forum. Note that for most forums this will mean a very large volume of email.

8. Apply - Click this button to save your "Sorting and Notifications" changes.

Please do send reset password emails, regarding this option ( or make a new option)

Why ? If a user do not want to receive emails, but lost his password, HOW he could reset his password ?

If you find yourself in that situation (unable to reset your password), please use the site's Contact form to request password reset assistance. I've updated the post accordingly. :-)
