composite Databound control Databinding logic

I am trying to build a composite databound control. In the articles that I have read, I found that the datasource property of CreteChildControls method is checked if it is not null then the control is bound.There are two scenarios basically one is when the databind method is called and the other is when data is loaded from viewstate. No where I found any code for loading data from viewstate except their mentioning so. They have passed a dummy object to create child controls method in such case.Can any one tell me the exact logic and the correct steps for databinding a control? I am totally confused.[8-)]
