The Mono Project

hi everyone,

just wondering why there's not a single section about MONO on this site? is MS against MONO or in favour of?

i read somewhere(sorry forgot exact site), that ASP.NET, Win Forms, Web Forms and few other technologies are stil under MS patents and that could be bone of contention.

it would be great if MONO is fully supported by MS, which will make .NET truly platform(OS) independent. MONO site says, dll(s) output by VS will run on MONO. it also says its between .net 1.x and 2.0

I hope hear more abut mono too ,It's my dream to see my Apps runing on linux

The CLR is an ECMA standard so they dont need Microsoft's support to implement that portion. Portions of mono, specifically the silverlight implementation called moonlight are very publicly supported. As for what technologies are supported I've found that it amounts to "All of the framework that matters". APIs which are windows or microsoft product specific are not implemented. A good example would be the sharepoint stuff.

Mono is supported by Novell. They took the ECMA standard of the CLR and made their own implementation of that to work on *nix boxes. How could MS honestly support that? It's not their product nor their OS.

Mono is only really behind the times on some of the most recent cutting edge technologies that MS has put out, in part because it's MS specific, in another part because it takes time and developers to do. My understanding is that all of asp.net 2.0 (except for web parts) has been implemented already. Microsoft is already assisting development of moonlight, which is to be the silverlight port for *nix.

Thanks for updating eRabbit. what really matter of concern which i read on internet is that there are few technologies in .NET which are under legal patents (sorry I'm not sure 100% what is behind it)

but I read that those technologies are bone of contention. anyway I would be more than happy to work on Mono so waiting patiently to get it installed on my system.
