Greatly appreciate you doing this.  I just installed it and it seems to be running fine.  However, when I try to open the project using Rainbow.duemetri.sln, I get a Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 error message:

The project file Rainbow.duemetri.sln cannot be opened.  The project type is not supported by this installation.

Great news! But I also receive the same error message as Barry:

The project type is not supported by this installation.

Would be great to have Rainbow up and running in Visual Studio 2005.

This is good news for the 2.0 community that has moved on from 1.1, But the replys are bad about not being able to use vs2005 :(. If someone contacts him about this can you please post his reply here. Also ask him if this release can install on medium trust with no problems. Thanks

Not sure why no one is monitoring this forum anymore from the core Rainbow team.  It is very frustrating.  It seems that when someone asks a question, rather than posting the reply on the forum so that everyone can benefit, the reply is sent directly to the person like it is some big secret.  I think this is contributing to the perception that Rainbow is a dead project.

I have to apologize that I did not do this myself when I received a reply.

The answer to your question is that you can open the project file in vs2005, but not the solution file.  I'm not clear why this is.  But, it does open in vs2005 and you can compile it with no errors (but many warnings).

It seems that the project is in transition and is being taken over by a new group, which may be a good thing, since by comparison with Drupal and DotNetNuke, this was a dead project.

I tried to just open the project-file but still get this message:

"The project file 'C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\rainbow\Rainbow.duemetri.net.csproj' cannot be opened.

The project type is not supported by this installation."

As can be seen, the whole solution is in the rainbow catalog under wwwroot. I dont think that should stop it from being opened by Visual Studio 2005?

I would like to think that there are many people around that is looking for a good alternative to DNN so hopefully we could make the Rainbow project up and running in VS 2005 soon.

    Regards Fred Petter.

Which version are you guys downloading?  Are you downing the rar or the one on our SVN?  I have been able to open both in VS 2005 and thats how I make my changes.  Heheh how do you think I got it to 2.0...in notepad?   The reason VS.NET 2005 might complain is because we are using the new Web application project type that is only half way supported by VS.NET 2005.  Guthrie assures me that the official release for VS.NET 2005 will be out soon.  For now I just do a simple extract and open up VS 2005 and select open file.  I then open ONLY the solution file.  I would also check that your solution file maps to the csproj file.  Also make sure that IIS is mapped.  You can configure it for cassani in VS 2005.  I really have had no problems opening it since I got a solid install.  You have it backwards Barry.  I recommend not opening the csproj file directly as that will prompt to upgrade.

Past attempts to go to the next version of rainbow have failed so Anant Systems Inc., took over admin of the project and is currently in the process of organization.  One of our big things is our new community and a new web site running Rainbow 2.0.  You will actually be able to easily find what you need with the different sections for users and developers.  Ill try to monitor this list with updates.

I created an easier to install release with instructions on the community.  I dont see where you are getting these invalid project errors as I have never gotten them.  All you need do is extract the rar to a folder and double click on only the solution file.  Are you using VWD or VS 2005?  The Web Application Project type is farily new so Visual gets confused on the project file.  However the solution file points to the project file by directory so you shouldnt be getting any problems.  Contact me directly by email if you are still getting issues with the latest release.

    Eric,
Should I be getting a message from VS2005 that the project needs to be converted from an earlier version when I click on the solution file?  I've downloaded and installed the new Web application type, unzipped the .rar file that I downloaded into a directory, and double clicked on the solution file, which opened vs2005 and told me the project needed to be converted to vs2005.

I clicked OK and went through the conversion, but it gives errors when trying to convert the project as follows:

Am I doing something wrong?  Your beginning post doesn't say anything about converting the project, so maybe I shouldn't have said OK, but then I wouldn't have been able to open the project either.  Any ideas?

    Thanks!

You should under no circumstance convert Rainbow.  As long as you are not using VWD [ which are the only issues im hearing because it doesnt support the new type] you should be fine.  I suggest going to the SVN over at http://forge.novell.com/modules/xfmod/project/?rainbow . and get the latest pull.  Test this with the new type [ you should only have to click to the solution file] and see if you still get the same issue.

No, I'm using VS2005 Standard Edition.  Does it have to be professional edition in order to work?  It's NOT VWD.  I downloaded the .rar file again from the link above just to make sure I have the latest one - still 2/2/2006, but I downloaded it again and unzipped the contents again, overwriting the earlier folder.  This time, it configured the Rainbow2006Release folder as a virtual directory, which it hadn't before.  So, I tried double clicking the solution file again (Rainbow.duemetri.sln) from explorer.  Still, it opens VS2005 with the conversion wizard and states that "the solution or project you are opening" must be converted.

Has anyone had luck with this yet?  I tried to follow all the above steps carefully.  Any more ideas, Eric?

    Yippee!!!!!!!!!!!!! It worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, here's what I did.  Hopefully it will help others out on this forum who might have been as frustrated as I was.  I guess previously I had downloaded a different zip file and tried to extract that.  It made a folder called Rainbow2006Release when unzipped.  That doesn't work.  If this is the folder that was created when you extracted the file, download the .rar file and extract that.

The .rar file needs a different extractor to unzip - it doesn't use WinZip.  Another hurdle, besides having the new project type installed for VS2005.  I downloaded a free trial of WinRAR.  Once you have a program that will extract .rar files, use it to extract the Rainbow.Portal.2.0.rar file.  I opened the .rar file in WinRAR and selected the Rainbow.2.0 folder (there are two folders, one with a ".." as the folder name and this one).  Select that folder and extract it to the wwwroot folder on your system and it will create a folder called Rainbow.2.0.

Now, here's another step.  *Make sure this Rainbow.2.0 folder is configured as an IIS virtual directory!*  Also, make sure it's set up as a 2.0 application.

After all that, I was able to double click the Rainbow.duemetri.suo file and it opened in VS2005 without a problem.  Hope this helps!  Now, on to figure out Rainbow!!!
