I'm trying to apply a custom theme to sharepoint.

I modified the spthemes.xml file accordingly.

I copied the compass theme folder to the themes directory and renamed it "GK" to match the associated entires in the xml file.

I also changed the .inf file inside that folder to say "GK."

The theme shows up under site settings > apply themes.  However, when I apply the theme, it throws an error at me and says "A theme with the name 'GK' and version already exists on the server..."

Please, dear God, someone help me on this....it's mind-numbingly frustrating.

I have the same issue. I broke this myself however by removing he themes.inf file from the _themes directory while others were using the site. This appeas to have broken the system of applying themes completely.

So what I did was this. I connected to the site with SharPoint Desinger (SPD) 2007 and removed all contents of the _themes directory. Then I made an empty themes.inf file and uploaded it to the _themes directory of my site using the file  import menu command in SPD 2007. Went back to the site, re-applied the theme and all worked okay for me.
