I want to download SQL Server and just play around with it,
without loading trial version that expires in 60 days..

any idea where a home programmer can get SQL Server w/Enterprise Mgr. at no cost?

Seems MS should give it to developers so we can hone our skills.

Microsoft is giving away SQL Server 2005 standard edition AND Visual Studio .net 2005 standard edition for FREE at their msdn events.

....did I mention the event is free too? :)

As an FYI, SQL 2005 is not supported by HMC 3.5 (or below) for use in the solution.  There has been some preliminary testing for provisioning SQL 2005 which seems to work, but it is still not officially supported.

HMC = I think that may be the Microsoft hosting tools they provide.

sql server 2005 is recommended to be used for dnn4. The sample query strings in the web.config are already preconfigured for it. See here: http://www.dotnetnukerocks.com/Administering/GettingStarted/Installation/DotNetNukev40InstallVideo/tabid/2574/Default.aspx (video tutorial on setting up dnn4 with sql server 2005)

HMC = Hosted Messaging and Collaboration.  See the service providers site at Microsoft for more details:

Download the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition it is free. And in place of Enterprise manager try downloading "SQL Server Management Studio". It is very much like the Enterprise manager and it is completely free.

You can get SQL Server 2005 Express and it has a management console as well.  The only catch that I heard is SQL Express can only handle DBs up to 4 GB.  Just search for it in Google, but Microsoft has it available...and it's FREE.
