I would like to use DotNetNuke with the web server included in Visual Web Developer Express.  All of the installation documentation that I have been able to find refers to IIS.  I don't have IIS installed in my computer and I'd much rather work with the web server in Visual Web Developer Express.  What do I have to do to get DotNetNuke to work with it?

Now, I don't know this for sure because I haven't used VSWDE, but unless it uses the same technology that VS 2005 (Whibdey) uses, I think you have to use IIS. And even if that's not true, why does it matter which web server you use. A web server is a web server and will consume resources regardless.

It matters because what I want to use what I already have.

Where does it say that the express edition comes with its own web server?

If the web server it comes with is Cassini which I'm pretty sure it is (Which is open source btw) then you should have no isue running it, however it is important to remember it is really meant for development & testing purposes and not for serious production use

Thanks, but how do I go about doing that?  I'm trying to follow the installation instructions ("DotNetNuke Installation Guide.doc") and it says to:

"2. In a local intranet configuration, create a Virtual Directory in IIS called DotNetNuke that points to this physical directory.  Make sure that Default.aspx is defined as a default document for this Virtual Directory."

As that statement applies to IIS, how do I achieve the equivalent with the web server in Visual Web Developer?

I think the web server in VWD express is only started if you start the application from within VWD express. If VWD express is not running you will not be able to access the website.

Why would you want to do this instead of using IIS ?

As I mentioned earlier I don't have IIS.  Can I start DotNetNuke from within VWD?  How would I go about doing that?

    VWDE system requirements are:
  • Microsoft Windows 2003 Server.
  • Windows XP, Service Pack 2.
  • Windows 2000, Service Pack 4.
  • If you are using one of those OS, you can run IIS. For Win2000, it's IIS5.0, WinXP, IIS5.1, Win2003, IIS6.

This is discussed in the VWD FAQ as quoted below:

Does Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition support ASP.NET 1.1?
No. Visual Web Developer Express Edition, like Visual Studio 2005 is designed to target a specific version of the .NET Framework and ASP.NET—in this case ASP.NET 2.0. While it is theoretically possible to use Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition to build ASP.NET 1.1 applications, it would be difficult because you would have to forcibly avoid using any new ASP.NET 2.0 features.

Going by this, since DotNetNuke presently works only with ASP.Net 1.1, I think you will need to install IIS.

How can you "run" it, if you don't "have" it?

You do know you can quickly install it (through Add/Remove Programs) if you have one of the above OS installed? Much easier and quicker than trying to get your other method working..

If you can run IIS then you should install it. There is no extra license fee for IIS.

To be fair, he DOESN'T have (and can't get) IIS if he doesn't have XP Professional.
