seriously :( how can anyone expect to get help with this moderation in place ? it is so de-motivating ... but, it does allow me to post a hidden message to the moderators, i suppose, because i can't see this message getting allowed ... or will it ? interesting...
if it does, it would mean moderation doesn't suck, which would make this message false, which would mean it shouldn't be allowed, which would mean moderation does suck. anyway, for the good of the .net community i hope moderation is one day removed and silly
and stupid posts are just deleted as they appear. i wonder if this message was even read, or if it was deleted due to the extreme use of exclamation marks. hmm.
well. i certainly am surpised ... and confused. it's worth noting, however, another issue with moderation ... i posted a topic still awaiting moderation (Something to do with textfiles and odbc) however shortly after posting i have resolved the issue and no
longer need help; but i can't let that be known, so the topic will probably be approved, and people may attempt to answer it but little do they know their responses are completely useless.. hmm.
This forum is unmodereated - posts go straight to the forum. Moderation is inplace to keep this site on topic and clean. Generally speaking posts get approved pretty quickly. There are quite a few moderators active from all over the world.
I'm sorry to hear you think moderation sucks, because we honestly endeavour to make moderation as fair and transparent as possible. If you have a concern with something related to moderation, or any concern with the forums at all, you're welcome to express
your concern. We'll then try to either address or answer your concern.
well sure, i can post an angry message immediately, which is kind of neat, but i can't see a major issue with posting questions w/o moderation ? or does this site receive tons of people spamming messages otherwise ?
(Note: I moved the original message to here from Getting Started. So the message did pass through moderation.) To address your concerns: > i can't see a major issue with posting questions w/o moderation The point of moderation is to create an environment where
developers can ask questions, and be confident of receiving helpful replies. Without moderation, a developer can be confident only of being spammed or called a ninny for asking such a question. If the developer has only x-chromosones or is of ethnic origin,
you can throw sexist and racist remarks into the likely replies. Moderation is the only real way to protect against this. > i posted a topic still awaiting moderation ... however shortly after posting i have resolved the issue Sure, that can happen. But such
occurrences are not that common, unless a developer forms the habit of posting a question the very moment s/he faces a problem. And what the developer should do is post a reply to their own message, explaining how they resolved the problem. Not only does that
prevent others from investigating a resolved problem, it also helps anyone else who later faces the same problem. > people may attempt to answer it but little do they know their responses are completely useless I'm taking this out of the context in which you
wrote it. However, moderation does help protect against people wasting their time. You see, new members will often ask the same question in many different forums. Presumably, they hope that it increases the chance of a reply. If it were not for the moderators
deleting all but one of those questions, others would indeed be wasting their time by trying to answer one question, when unbeknownst to them the question has already been resolved elsewhere. Moderation is not perfect. However, it's the best way to create
an atmosphere where developers feel comfortable asking and answering questions.
By the way, members who have been around for a while and have proven themselves to be polite and helpful become unmoderated. They can then post messages that do not pass through moderation, and appear immediately. They are also permitted to edit their own messages.
For such members, the forums are effectively unmoderated. This really gives us the best of both worlds ... the benefits of moderation for all, and the benefits of no moderation for many.
> Without moderation, a developer can be confident only of being spammed or called a ninny > for asking such a question. If the developer has only x-chromosones or is of ethnic origin, > you can throw sexist and racist remarks into the likely replies. > Moderation
is the only real way to protect against this. Yes, I'm warming to the idea ... however, I just have participated in other forums (mainly the java forum .. :) ) which is unmoderated and really has no issues with this kind of activity at all... but if it does
happen here alot, which you seem to indicate, then moderation isn't so bad, i suppose ... (at least when you are not in a hurry, like i was :) > And what the developer should do is post a reply to their own message, explaining how > they resolved the problem.
Not only does that prevent others from investigating a resolved > problem, it also helps anyone else who later faces the same problem. sure, i would've liked to do that but the original message has not yet been approved :)
When I woke this morning, there were 88 messages awaiting approval, and it's taken a while to go through them all. So the delays you experienced are not typical. As you're new here, it was probably a frustrating first experience. Rest assured, moderation is
normally pretty transparent, and keeps the forums humming along nicely.
My first few weeks in the forums, I also thought the moderation was really slowing me down too. . .but it's not such a big deal. I am not sure how the moderation queue works but I am thinking part of the reason this is especially annoying in the beginning may
be because you are posting in some of the most popular forums or popular times of day? Secondly, you say that shortly after posting you figure out the answer. This can happen to anyone sometimes but if it is happening frequently maybe you need to re-evaluate
how quickly you are posting easy questions before trying to find the answer on your own? Just think if everyone did this, how much more efficient the forums could be?
