I have been developing on my laptop with IIS and ASP.NET for several weeks now and have been debugging against my local IIS, no network, when at home. My laptop runs XP Professional with the latest patches. While at work the laptop is on a network but all debugging
goes against the local IIS. Everything has been very smooth with no problems. The following is the problem description when I run in debug. Error while trying to run project: Unable to start debugging on the web server. Server side-error on sending debug HTTP
request. It goes on to say make sure server is operating correctly, no syntax errors in web.config, etc. I ran the app without debugging and get the following message. Server Application Unavailable The web application you are attempting to access on this
web server is currently unavailable. Please hit the "Refresh" button in your web browser to retry your request. Administrator Note: An error message detailing the cause of this specific request failure can be found in the system event log of the web server.
Please review this log entry to discover what caused this error to occur. My security settings and web.config are the same as the other day when all was working. There have been no new patches added since it last worked. I have a a different simple .net app
that is a single page and a button that I used early on that was working as late as 2 days ago. It is demonstrating the same problem. I have found this same question asked on other forums and no one has given a satisfactory answer, just guesses. I have been
working on this for hours and nothing works. I am out of ideas. Help!

This is the same error that I reported in a previous thread re ASP.NET sites returning an HTTP 500 error. In my case, I installed the latest Windows security updates between the day my apps worked and the day they didn't. You didn't install the updates? DAvid

No update was installed between the time it worked and did not work that I know of. It was on our corporate network but my network guys said there was no automatic update process that could have installed any updates to this laptop. To make sure though I will
look at your previous thread and get the update that did it and check my laptop to see if it has it. Thanks

did you do to correct the problem?
Think I have it based on what you guys have said, there were two patches from 8.20.03 that were the culprits. My system did indeed have those patches since the network guy did enable autoupdate on my laptop. It has affected several other machines as well. We
had to do a system restore to fix it unfortunately. The guy that did the work in house has the names, there are two, of which at least one is the offending update. I will post the names later. Hope this gets you going. We are back to an even keel on at least
one of our machines. This was an expensive problem in lost development time for us.
The patches August 2003, Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (822925) Security Update for Microsoft Data Access Components (823718) were the two patches applied. It appears that 823718 is the culprit but not positive.
Doing a System Restore to pre-patch Wednesday got one of my development machines working again. The other machine won't complete the Restore, no reason given. A temporary respite, but I hope Msoft acknowledges and fixes this problem soon! David Low
