Running Mac in a VM is kinda hard to achieve, but I don't know if your faculty has any Mac systems? Or if possible you could buy a Mac mini, and it's way easier to run windows on a Mac then the other way arround. But MonoDroid and MonoTouch are provided by
Xamarin, and Xamarin has plenty of online samples and howto information. If you need any more information, just let me know. P.S. as both MonoDroid and MonoTouch are .NET based you should be able to share your business logic between both platforms.

Well you will have to do some of the thinking yourself ;-)
But you can develop native apps for android and iOS in .net using MonoDroid and MonoTouch.
But you can also decide to go for a mobile web application.

You should go for iPhone Application they are IN now a days and will helpfull for you to start your professional career at some handsome package,
and you can start with any common idea like .....
1) Sale/Purchase system for salesman to get know how for products in their company etc
2) for 1122 to get directions or traffic stats for any emergancy are on iPhone etc
