i'm writing this because i just lost a very long post

you represent Microsoft ... compared to, for example, the editor at the hMailServer forum, i can go back and forward many screens and never lose any thing ....
please fix this
g.
P.S.: if i lose a post because of a network error, it's gone here by at sites like hMailServer's forum, it's still availble via back.
imho, BACK is better.

That's odd. If i test the hMailServer forum, hitting back after i start a post causes whatever i've typed to be lost when i come forward again (using IE). if i use Chrome, then i can go back and forward and i can see the unposted text i had typed. So
my experience on that forum you referred to is identical to this one as well as many others i use.
i.e.
Using Chrome i can move back and forward and chrome retains what i've typed. Using IE, if i go back, i would lose what i've typed.
HTML5 local storage / session storage could become a strategic approach in the future but the approach most people use now is to copy paste to notepad on a regular basis.

Mike ... you observation is 100% correct ... i just made a post to hMailServer's forum and used ie8 and now see that ie8 does not play well with the back/forward buttons ...
... normally, the computer that i use with hMailServer's forum is one where FireFox is my primary browser.
QUESTION: whose behaviour is correct? ie or (Chrome && Firefox)? imho, the behaviour of ie8 is the
least desirable
~~ is it possible to have the forum's editor play equally as well with ie8 as it does with Chrome && Firefox?
@ XIII ... Kris, i cut paste a lot ... however, this defensive mechanism is a real pain and it's when i forget that i get bitten ... usually, when i cut/paste nothing goes wrong ... however, when
something does go wrong, it's a major pain ... hence this thread.

To follow up, an update was made to the site last week which resolves this issue in a different way. You should now find that if you attempt to leave the Post page but had started a message, you will be prompted with "are you sure?"
This does not address the issue of losing a post due to a network error during the posting process, but does address accidentally navigating away from the page, which was the topic of this thread.
@ tmorton thank you for the update; much appreciated.

This is a good start Terri; it's saved me a couple of times already.
However, i can not remember the details ... there appears to be an "are you sure?" anomally i've noticed; when i can reproduce it, i'll start a new thread.

GMail and SO save drafts AFAIK; with GMail, AFAIK, there's both and explicit save and an auto-save.
of course, the process of save/auto-saving could also fail because of a network error ...
one possible solution might be to save the draft to a cookie ... i'm unsure as to whether that's possible, or even advisable; also, it would not work if cookie saving were disabled.
