There is always some debate regarding what's the best book for learning ASP.NET. The answer to this question is to learn ASP.NET you have to start using it. I think this book
Beginning ASP.NET 4 in C# and VB really does just that. It explains the basics to beginners in a simple format (I think). It also has a website you complete as a project while working through the book. If your familiar with HTML and CSS you will fly through
the first 3 chapters, you really get into the meat of the book in chapter 4. As an added bonus, it shows you the programming language in C# and VB.NET. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to learn ASP.NET.

That's what many have said - but there are also several tutorials available that most people find helpful (alongside the textbooks)
