I have the above error while deploying the svc file via IIS 7 but when I deployed it via VS 2008 everything works ok.
Can anyone please help? Please note I have checked the web site configuration to map to asp.net 2.0 and added the handler mapping for .svc file in IIS 7 but no luck.

Asp.net either is not installed or not configured to serve .svc files as ASP.NET files. Have you tested your IIS7/ASP.NET installation with a Hello World ASPX page? Have you set the correct pipeline? See www.iis.net for help configuring IIS.

I have another web application project running on the current IIS 7 and it is working ok. How do I configure IIS 7 to server .svc file anyway? as far as I know there is no need to add handler mapping for .svc file.

Go to IIS. Right click on your deployed application and click Property. Go to ASP.Net tab..Check if there any ASP.Net version mentioned or not. If version mentioned then check wheter thats correct one or not.

Also, what is the target framework version in VS 2008.
Check the version of framework for your website.

it is default to version 2.0 which is correct. it is using VS 2008 but no option to select version 3.5 (i think it will never be).
btw.. it is using X 509 service-client credentials.. I just found out the need to extract the privatekey (FindPrivateKey) has solved the problem.
