    Hi,

some first impressions about the new text editor:

    • loads faster (after having the ctrl + F5 hit to get rid of all the javascript errors)
    • The code insertion tool has now several options at the bottom for no clutter. I know these are there for the syntaxhighlighter part.
      • Could these be removed and have the settings set in the javascript initialization itself? This would render all newly inserted code to look the same otherwise I expect clutter like here: http://forums.asp.net/t/1437326.aspx.
      • For the css I wasn't able to get the shiny bar.
      • It would be better looking, and also better wrapping, if version 2 instead of 1.5 would be used for syntaxhighlighter.
    • When I reply the focus isn't on the texteditor area. I need to exaclty click with my mouse on the first line.
    • Could it be that the code insertion tool is not available when using quick reply all of a sudden? I didn't see the icon.

    Grz, Kris.

I dont think the code paste button was ever in the Quick Reply window, its one of the reasons I didnt use to use it.

Font size seems a bit small, I normally browse this forum in three or four clicks up on the browser zoom so it has now dropped to something like 12px... seems like the rest of the world gets 10px entry?

Glad the html bug turning < into &lt; is fixed

Shame the "View Plain" in the formatted source code opens in a new window instead of just converting the on-page snippet. With a dual monitor setup you never know where the screen is going to popup - just means more mouse travelling for me.

Wonder if links get converted in FF3? - http://www.example.com/ (nope!)

Hi Kris, most of those I posted as known issues last night.

We had some technical difficulties getting 2.0 of the syntax highligher working, and due to time contraints we deployed with 1.5.  We do have a work item logged to updated to 2.0, and I have now updated the known issues to reflect this.

What you are suggesting on standaridzation probably makes sense.  If we do that work it should be in conjunction with/after the 2.0 update.

Firebug is showing it as 12px for me.  It does seem a little small.  We'll probably wait until after the update to the 2.0 SyntaxHighlighter before making style updates.

We can revisit this after the update to 2.0.

    Awesome.

So I noticed that asp.net option has gone for pasting code. Presume this has been combined with html now that it has a more intelligent parser?

SyntaxHighlight apparently supports the creation of custom brushes if the built in highlighting doesn't do what you need. There's an example of asp.net markup that was pasted using the xml/html option here: http://forums.asp.net/t/1437326.aspx#3254185.  So far things seem to look pretty good for just using the standard xml/html option.

Even though I cleared my cache, I find the performance of the new editor terrible and the behaviour worse.

Example, it's scrambled code lines that I've pulled into the text window (not the code window).  I find this strange because clipboard access is so basic to Windows programming.  At first I thought it was me but it happened a second time.

Also, as mentioned before, my spell checker has disappeared.  I really prefer to spell check.

IE7 and Win XP Pro SP3 on one system; Vista Business and IE7 is another.

P.S.:  also, it always puts the cursor after the first byte of this line ... I always have to backspace.     g.

Thanks for the feedback.   I've picked the issues out of this thread and have added them to the known issues.

The jury is still out on the performance, so I have not added that.  And we still have some adjustments to do on the source code highlighter (moving to a newer version for one), so I've not added any new formatting issues.

if you're using ieSpell, then it's just a right click away. Just right click and select "Check Spelling"

yes, I am using ieSpell ~~ I've been teaching my customers for decades "when in doubt, right click" ~~ I did not do that because I've done so many posts where I clicked the spell check button on the toolbar that clicking the spell check button has become a wired into my brain habit.

The spell check button has disappeared; fortunately, the right click works.

OLD  EDITOR:   I stretch *this* textarea Window ~~ size persists.        Not in the new editor.

    Gerry

Please note: ieSpell is really slow with the new editor.  I only have 512MB with WinXP Pro SP3 and IE7 ... iexplore.exe causes a lot of page faults, way more than Symantec's Rtvscan.exe.  I wonder if there are design issues with the new editor?

ieSpell bonus:  while not everywhere, I just realized there are other places outside of forums.asp.net where I can use ieSpell by right-clicking.

MORE   NOTES:   had a power glitch had to shut down ie7.

while waiting, tried chrome:  sign does not work with chrome ... clicked buttom many times, never got the sign in screen.

    IE7, WinXP Pro SP3

Just found another BUG in the new editor:

from http://www.asp.net/learn/mvc/#MVC_Security I cut and paste into the new editor:

#21 | Validation with the Data Annotation ValidatorsView in VB or C#

Note:  Validation with the Data Annotation Validators does not paste as a link.  It did in the old editor.

Note:  #21 | pastes as bold.  If my recollection is correct, it did not do that on the old editor.

    Regards,

*shrug*, works for me in the same environment: http://forums.asp.net/p/1440199/3261799.aspx#3261799

Edit: actually, the link is not correct.  Mike's answer is better.

    The old editor produced this:

#21 | Validation with the Data Annotation ValidatorsView in VB or C#

So the old editor did not paste that text as a link and it did paste   #21 |   as bold (or more specifically as <strong>#21 | </strong>).  The old editor did introduce an extra underline style that did not exist - perhaps leading you to believe you had pasted a functioning link when you hadn't.

In this case, i much prefer the behavior of the new editor.  It seems to have accurately produced the same markup that you copied from that page.  That text in that page is not a link itself. The text and the image above it together are wrapped in a link. Since you copied only the text and not the image, you did not actually copy the containing link tag and/or its href.  since you did not have the actual link tag on the clipboard with its href, i don't see how the editor here would be able to do anything other than what it did.

If we copy the part of that page that is actually a link though, then we get this:

#21 | Validation with the Data Annotation ValidatorsView in VB or C#

So it doesn't seem like a bug to me.

I am not having any problems with the editor remembering its size after i stretch it to become larger. Seems to work the same as before.
