I would appreciate some advice on the type of hosting I will need.
I want to host a number of websites that will share some pages and user-controls as described at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825996/en-us. I want to provide for expansion
and would therefore like ‘unlimited’ domains and databases.
Some of the things I will need:
1. .NET 2.0
2. Unlimited domains
3. Unlimited databases (SQL 2005)
4. Write permissions, file upload (quite a lot of disk IO)
5. FTP
6. Domain registration
7. Impersonation in code
8. Full-text search (on one table – not updated often)
9. Some setup/trial time would also be appreciated!
I ideally want to offer flexible subscriptions, i.e. the user can add features that will increase the subscription payment. I’m planning to use WorldPay for this, but could any hosting companies offer this facility?
I know 1and1 will let you have unlimited domains on the account but I see you are in England. Their datacenter is in Germany which can cause issues with regards to seo.
I think Fasthosts provide a developer API.
I know they do with their Reseller accounts so that you can do provisioning such as database setup and domain registration. I dont know if you can do it on a dedicated server tho. Maybe you should call their sales line and see if they can offer you something
to meet your requirements?
Do you really need unlimited domains hosting and unlimited databases? I will advice you to set a number and look out for a host after that. Remember, you will always risk quality and reliability when you will be going with anyone offering Unlimiteds.
I will recommend you either
softsyshosting.com or
discountasp.net. Both are very good hosts and you can choose one that best fits in your needs and budget.
Thanks all for the suggestions. I've had very little experience of hosting sites, so bear with me please.
I'm aware that there's not such thing as 'unlimited' in reality, but I want to ensure that I can expand if necessary. For example, with the softsys 'Reseller Platinum' plan I can have up to 60 hosted domains. What happens when I need to host that 61st domain?
The fasthosts and softsys plans seem easy to understand but the discountasp.net doesn't seem to make any distinction between shared, dedicated and reseller plans. I see that the latter has UK based hosting. Can anyone explain their plans or should I just
contact their sales department with the above information?

You can purchase another reseller plan and combine it with your existing plan. I had similar question and they explained this to me. However, till now I have yet not reached the max limit.

Discountasp only offers shared hosting plans with single domain hosting. However, they have lot of resources available as addons and you need to pay extra for it.

Hey, DiscountAsp have just launched UK datacenters but they only offer individual sized shared hosting packages.
Looking up SoftSys on max mind it looks like they dont use uk data centers.
If you are going to spend a lot of money on a decent server you really want to get it right first time. Moving your setup can be a big hassle a year down the line!
Is your primary market for this site uk, american, or global?
Take a look at VPS from kickassvps.com - it will cost you $35 to start and if you need more power you can upgrade to more powerfull VPS without problem. (They are in US - not sure what country your site will target...)

What you describe is a perfect opportunity for a dedicated server, though you'll pay for it.

Contacting sales will be most appropriate.

You can check our Windows VPS plans at http://www.eukhost.com/windows-vps-hosting.php
Check the plans and let me know if you need any further details.
