I have been getting this error and I could never find out the reason for it. So what happened was that I changed the background for my master page and now I am trying to upload it again through Visual Studio using FTP. I keep getting this error:

When I click on view log:

Try FileZilla ftp client its very easy and best for uploading files on the server.

I have another FTP program, but I would really rather stick with visual studio since in there i can see what has changed and I could change codes and then directly upload it in the same program.

If I remember correctly, what you are seeing is a bug w/ VS.NET. I remember one of our customer had the same problem and confirmed w/ MSFT. I forgot what the detail was but I think it was related to the server sending the wrong timestamp on the file.
You may be better off w/ a 3rd party FTP client.
