When i load the soultion i get the following error
The project file "\\home\username\Data\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\Commerce.MVC\Commerce.MVC.Web\Commerce.MVC.Web.csproj" cannot ne opened. The project type is not supported by this installation.
Is this is because i have a different version of ASP.NET MVC Framework installed? What version are these samples written in?

This is not anything to do with MVC. You need to check your VS2008 installation. Go to add/remove programs, select Visual Studio 2008. In the VS2008 setup wizard make sure that you have Visual Web Developer selected under Language Tools. You may also
need Visual C# and possibly Unit Testing Tools.
If this doesn't fix your problem, then take a note of what features are installed and post them here.

Can you check the csproj file to make sure the correct project type guid is included? If your project was created on a version of mvc before preview 2, then you will need to make this change.
"'ProjectTypeGuids'... You will find the below piece of code...
Replace the above with:
If this is not the case, what sku of vs are you using and which version of mvc do you have installed?,
