In visual studio 2005 I was able to do a 'open file' from the file menu and select a file from an FTP server, work on it, and save it back.  In the open file dialogue box there was a list of 'FTP locations' and an option to 'add/modify ftp locations'.  Great for doing a quick change to a web.config or something like that.

I see none of this in VS 2008, and if I just pick the FTP server from the explorer list, and select the file from the ftp server, i immediately get an error of  'document  cannot be opened.  It has been deleted, renamed or moved'.

Any ideas?  Why (if it really has) has this funtionality been removed from 2008?

I see what you mean.  I went into office 2003 (word) and this feature is there.  Could it be that vs2008 needs something higher than office 2003?

Well, my VS2008 doesn't support this feature even I have office 2007 installed.  I've logged this as a bug in the internal database to the office integration team.  But there might be other possibilities such that VS2008 has customized "open file dialog" ...  I'll keep you posted to see if this is by design, or something we'll fix in next version.  :)  Thanks.

For Orcas 2008/sp1, we've to live with it.  It will get considerred in the next version, as the current bug triage result.  As for now, I think you've to find another workaround for this feature.  Sorry about it.

thanks for your help.   It's really too bad - it made things easy.  I guess I'll have to find another FTP client alternative.
