Hi, I have installed Visual Studio 2005 on Vista 64 with SP1 and the Vista Update. Trying to open an existing Web application project stored on a remote network folder using a remote IIS server I get this error: "Unable to read project file xxx.vbproj. The Web Application project is configured to use IIS. IIS is not installed on this computer. To access local web sites........................................."

This worked fine under XP and for us it is not really an option to have these Web apps locally.

Why is this now different on Vista and what can I do to get this to work?

PS! I also tried installing IIS7 locally and got another error: Cannot find 'http://remoteurl" on localhost..."

PSS! Sorry if this is not the best place to post this, but I have tried Vista forums and VS 2005 Installation and Setup. For the last one a moderator moved me to Off-Topic even though it is clear that VS 2005 fails to work as expected after newly installing!

     Regards, Stig

    Hi,

You can try to install Internet Information Services and IIS 6 Metabase and IIS 6 Configuration Compatibility on your machine.

Besides, you can try to run Visual Studio 2005 using Administrator permission.

For more information, you can try to refer to http://blogs.msdn.com/shahpiyush/archive/2007/06/01/3028325.aspx

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks for the reply, Thomas.

Unfortunately I have already tried the things you suggest. If I install IIS 7 with the IIS 6 Metabase and Configuration Compatability I get the error - "Cannot find 'http://remoteurl" on localhost..." - when trying to open the existing project files. The issue seems to be that it is not even trying to resolve the http://remoteurl address, but insists on looking on localhost.

If I try to create a new Web application on a share that works fine. But once I try to use the project properties, go to the Web settings and set it to "Use IIS Web server" with a remote URL it comes back with the message "IIS is not installed on this computer. To access local IIS Web sites, your must...."

I do run VS 2005 using Admistrator permissions.

I have not been able to develop for any of the projects we have in this scenario for 4 weeks now so needless to say anything you can do to help is highly appreciated.

    Any more ideas?
