I just upgraded vrom VS05 to VS08 (as evidenced by my flurry of new posts).  What a great thing!

One issue I have not been able to resolve or handle well is the constant waiting I am having to do (10-15 seconds) any time I reposition my cursor in Source View.

I have installed all of the latest hotfixes that I could locate.

    Anyone else experiencing this?

    Thanks!

Why don't computers do what I want them to do instead of....what I tell them to do!?!?!?

    Hello,

I think that depends on your pc specifications. I have this issue on my PC which is an AMD 2600 athlon XP with 1 GB RAM BUT on my lappy which is a dual 2800 and 2 GB RAM it is loading fast.

    HTH
    Regards

OOPS!  Embarrassed Sorry, I became too anxious to hit the Post button.

I have a Dell Precision 690, Intel Xeon Duo 5130, 3GB Ram running XP Pro SP2.

I found others having what seems to be a similar issue, but only in Design View.

If you installed the latests hotfix then you must be using a third party control that is causing this performance issue.

The only 3rd Party Control I sometimes use is a spell check control from  ASPSpellCheck.com.

I have used it on one page in the solution I currently have loaded, but have not opened that page in VS08 since installing VS08.

I did not migrate my settings from VS05.

I do not have the control in my VS08 Toolbox.

Could that control still be causing it?

I've also installed the hotfix, but it not helps for me so much (I'm not using any 3rd party control or add-ins, just pure vs).

Sometimes in the source view I've just typing or press the undo repeatedly etc. and the ide hangs for several seconds. For me vs with the hotfix is slower than the rtm version Indifferent

But fortunately the ide only hangs (and not crash),and after "some" seconds it works normal. Maybe the next hotfix will be better (for me).

I agree, it is better than crashing.  It is just a constant, on-going annoyance that dramatically effects productivity acheived within a given day.

    A few other specifics:

    1. Whenever I switch pages that I am working in (pages are already loaded, switch by clicking on the tabs across the top of the VS08 IDE) VS08 seems to think it needs to re-read every ODS I have set up in the project, whether it is utilized in the newly current page or not.
    2. Anytime I cut/paste or place the cursor at a different position in Source View, VS08 seems to think it needs to re-read the web.config file.

Maybe something will be in VS08 SP1?

Is there a more effective place to post this?

Please!  Any relief! Because of this, with VS08 I literally am only able to accomplish less than half of what I could in a day of work in VS2005.Angry

    Hi again,

When i saw this thread, i applied the following hot-fix

    http://blogs.msdn.com/chkoenig/archive/2008/02/08/visual-studio-2008-hotfix-available.aspx

to my vs 2008 and it worked like a charm after that.

    Have you tried that?

Of course we applied and tried the hotfix.

The hotfix helped you, but for me (and many others) the hotfix is a nightmare, sorce view slower than before Smile

The only improvement I got from the hotfix is the faster javascript colorization, but the normal source view sporadically hangs for 10-15 seconds, after that I can continue to work (it seems that the ide waits for something...) (I never use the design or split view)

    Hmm,

Try to disable the direct help (help toolwindow) and let me know if that will increase the performance

    Thanks, but

Disabling the dynamic help forever is the first task for any vs.net "veterans" (I'm using vs more than 10 years)

I've remember when I first started vs.net 2002, the dynamic help looked very good... until I saw the vs process with 90-100% cpu usage in the task manager Big Smile

Anyway these hangs in vs 2008 is not a big deal for me, just very disappointing to see this performance degradation from vs2005 to vs2008.

    Ok, try the followings

    1) In Internet Explorer 7...

    Tools->Internet Options->Advanced->Security Node->Uncheck 'Check for publisher's certificate revocation*'

    2) disable the antivrus

I did not realize IE7 Setting affected anything in the VS08 IDE.  They do?  Even when IE7 is not open?
