     Hi,

We are migrating a large number of users from an exchange 2000 installation to HMC 3.5.

These users are "base" users (only owa, pop, imap) - they don't have mapi, oma and all the other advance features of exchange.

Unfortunately mailmig doesn't work on the old platform (they have a highly custom platform). Exmerge does work, and we are able to create the pst files.

As there is a large number of users, we were trying to create all the users on our platform, and later import contents of the user's mailbox.

As the users don't have mapi we aren't able to migrate the users content with exmerge. If we give mapi access, even if for the time needed to migrate, we aren't able to remove the access to the GAL, and all users will be able to see the others on the same organization.

Are your users internal or external? Do they have to pass border router to get access to Exchange servers?

They are external, but this is a hosting provider and there are "premium" users with all the features (including mapi).

Thanks Dmitri, but (and there's always a but) the users will still see the other users in the webmail (damned GAL).

Currently (and probably it isn't the best ideia) all users share the OU. As these are "basic" users we would have one user por OU or all users sharing the OU. That's why I didn't want allow MAPI, even if for a limited time.

OWA does not use GAL. At all.

But they will still see all the other users, don't they?

Or is there a way to prevent it?

You can create them as "consumer" users.

And how will i migrate the contents? as a consumer I won't be able to give MAPI access - so exmerge won't work Crying

Thank you Dmitri, but believe me I have wasted way too much time trying to think in a way to solve both my issues (users don't see each other, and import all they contents).

    1. You can give formal MAPI access to consumer user

    2. Consumers do not have access to any GAL/AL. It means they can't setup MAPI profile.

    3. When HMC provisions consumer user, it makes sure, that user can't see anyone in OWA by populating msExchQueryBaseDN with users DN.

HI You can look at migrating the data using IMAP to move the content slower process but can be scripted.

Problem with this approach is you need all the users passwords, and it may not be easy... Once I've done this with mailmig...

If you are migrating them then you are going to have to have a cut over day when you move the content after you cut over so you could try resetting the passwords to something you will know.

what access do you have to the old system?
