I need help with the classifieds starter kit. I have godaddy hosting and I can't get it up to the server. I believe it is because my connection strings were not properly modified, and my SQL databases that I created are not being recognized. If someone
would be willing to walk me through it I will pay $50.

Have you tried posting here:

I work through Saturday, so I'm only available in the evening, but I will walk you through it if you want.
Or if you just want it done, I'll upload it for you for the $50.
I too have godaddy hosting, and it was a little tricky to get it right.
Let me know what you would like to do.

If you could walk me through it that would be great! I would really like learn how to make it work. I am available anytime this weekend to work on it, or next week in the evening. Please let me know what time would be best.

First off I need a little information from you.
What type of database are you using? (MSSQL???)
And did you signup for the account with two MSSQL databases??
Did you make any changes to the database other than maybe creating usernames???
In the meantime, your first step is to upload the starter kit,
everything except the .mdf databases in the App_Data folder, and the welcome.htm file.
Then go to the control panel on godaddy, and I think it's in settings, change the asp.net run time to 2.0
Let me know on the answers to my questions above, and I will continue.
Talk to you later

I have the GoDaddy plan that allows two MSSQL databases. I didn't make any changes to the databases.
The runtime has been set to 2.0
All files have been uploaded except for the two .mdf files and the welcome.htm

Great, that's exactly like mine.
Next you need to create two mssql databases.
I will call one of the members and the other classifieds. (it speaks for itself which one's which)
When you create the databases take note of the username and password you set, Write it down.
The members database is perfect as is, once it's created, but the classifeds one is not.
You need to go into the classifieds database and delete all the tables, views, and stored procedures.
Some of the tables are referencing others so you have to delete them in a certain order.
If you hit the delete button and it tells you it's binded to another, just select a different one 'til they're all gone.
Now you're ready to start loading your classifieds database,
If you look on your computer in your classifieds starter kit folder App_Data
one of the files is classifieds-add.sql
this file holds the original classifieds database configuration.
Open the file with a notepad copy and paste into the query analizer on godaddy for the classifieds database.
Now do the same with the classifieds-categories.sql file, that creates the categories.
Just a mental note, but I had an issue uploading that first .sql file
It was saying error near "," or something like that.
The problem was in the storedprocedure RelistAd
Part of it is commented out, and godaddy doesn't like it, (-- @DateCreated smalldatetime = NULL,)
So you have two options,
1. delete the line before you send it in the query analizer.
I did that so that if the ad expires and is then relisted, it changes the date created to today, and the listing is at the top of the search again.
Now we are ready to go into the web.config to set the connection strings.
Let me know when you are ready.
We'll get you up on Sunday.
Talk to you tomorrow.

When creating the databases should I choose DNS and ASP schema?
Dec 23, 2007 05:38 AM|darkknight187|LINK
Sorry, I forgot about that.
I think you do select them both.
Dec 23, 2007 06:00 AM|kenny85|LINK
I went ahead and chose DSN and ASP schema
Both MS SQL databases were created
All the tables, views, and stored procedures were deleted from the classifieds database
The files classifieds-add.sql and classifieds-categories.sql were uploaded through the query analyzer
Thanks for your help, talk to you tomorrow

Alright, you're almost there.
Now let's work on the web.config connection strings.
Keep in mind that you will need two different versions of the web.config.
1. holds the connection strings that are currently working on your computer, so I would copy that to a notepad so you can put it back after we upload the new web.config.
2. holds the online web.config
There's two sets in the connection strings, the first points to the classifieds database, and the second points to the members database.
For illustration purposes, lets say my user name is user and my password is pass.
<add name="classifiedsConnection" connectionString="Data Source=whsql-vxxxxxxxxxxsecureserver.net;
<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=whsql-xxxxxxxxxxxx.secureserver.net;
Copy and paste the connection string above into your web.config
now to get the info for the Datasource, initial catalog, user, and pass;
Go into godaddy control panel,
on the right you will see a action icon for edit/view details, click it.
on the top of the new page you will see an icon for configuration, click it.
This will show several methods of connecting, you want the third one, SqlConnection (.NET):
copy that into the appropriate connection string in your web.config.
And test your site.
It should work.
We still have two more steps though to set the images, and admin control for your site.
Let me know when your site is running, or if there's any issues.
Talk to you later.

The website is now running!!
Dec 23, 2007 09:17 PM|darkknight187|LINK
That's right, I'm the man.
So the last two steps,
To set yourself as admin all you have to do is follow this link
http://forums.asp.net/t/1110595.aspx (the link to the users.aspx file it at the bottom of the first post)
unzip it and upload the two files to your website, in the main folder where anyone can access it.
(Technically it is in C#, and I use VB but it seems to work fine anyway, so I would just leave the code alone.)
Create yourself a login through your website, just like any user of your site.
Then point to your browser to the users.aspx file, and set your Id as administrator.
Then delete or move the two users files to a protected part of the website, such as Admin folder.
By the way it does not delete the user Id from the classifieds database when you use this tool to delete a user.
It does delete the user and all, but the current count of members displayed in your admin section will be wrong unless you delete the user from the classifieds members table aswell. I never fixed the issue.
Other than that, it works great.
The second thing to do is only if you are NOT using photos in the database. (continue if you are using a folder on your server to hold the images)
login to your godaddy control panel
go into content, and choose directory management.
click create a directory
Enter the name of your folder that will hold the images. (Upload)
Check the boxes read, web, write, browse.
And just like that it will work properly, there might be a 10-15 min wait for the settings to take place.
I have one more suggestion for database management, I'll find the link and post in a few.
Dec 23, 2007 09:26 PM|darkknight187|LINK
I found it, the program is a free download from microsoft.
It's called sql server management studio express
Here's the download link:
The main thing I use it for is generating sql scripts from the database.
like those scripts that you loaded earlier in the query analizer.
The biggest tip I can give is to make frequent backups of your site.
I've got a folder organized by date, with lots of versions of the site, and I have made updates that I thought was working perfectly, but it altered another part of the site, and without the backups I would have been pissed.
And don't be afraid to try things.

For some reason I am not able to create users
When I push submit after entering user info into the register page I am sent to my error page.
Also after unzipping the files and uploading I am not able to access the users.aspx page, I made sure to put the files in the root folder
When I go to mysite/users.aspx I recieve my error page...could that be just because there are no users created?

Dec 23, 2007 11:01 PM|darkknight187|LINK
So if I understand you correctly, you tried to register a user name and it gets an error when submitted????
If this is the case,
Log on to the online version of your site through visual web developer,
and change the web.config in two places,
<customErrors defaultRedirect="Error.aspx" mode="RemoteOnly"/>
And try to register again and post back the error.
Keep in mind this is the online web.config, not your local computer version.
Dec 23, 2007 11:22 PM|kenny85|LINK
You are correct I am not able to register users
I changed the changed the web.config file to <customErrors mode="Off"/>
I could not find <compilation debug="false"> anywhere in my web.config file
Dec 23, 2007 11:40 PM|darkknight187|LINK
It's added automatically when you do debugging, so I thought it might be in there,
but in your case just add it, make sure it is placed in between the <system.web> tags.
On mine the system.web tags are right above the connection strings.
Dec 24, 2007 12:16 AM|kenny85|LINK
I made the changes below, but for some reason I still get the custom error page when trying to register
Dec 24, 2007 12:26 AM|darkknight187|LINK
Try opening your site in a new browser, a different type would be perfect, but closing the current and navigating to your site should work.
It's probably just using the browser cache.
If that doesn't produce a more specific error email me your web.config
Dec 24, 2007 01:10 AM|kenny85|LINK
I think I found the problem. I forgot to enter a password for a database.
I am now able to create users! :)
Dec 24, 2007 01:35 AM|kenny85|LINK
Thank you for your help!! I couldn't have done it without you
Dec 24, 2007 02:46 AM|darkknight187|LINK
So it sounds like your up and running now, and your right the password wasn't entered for the web.config.
By the way that error screen that you sent me is the one I was talking about.
Not the connection strings but the other two changes I had you make to the web.config,
custom errors and the compilations debug tags, as they were, is how it should be when you're ready to go live.
Then when there is an error, it won't show the user what happened, and it will redirect to a custom error page.
Glad I could be of help, can't wait to see what you come up with.
