i am having exactly the same kind of problems.
Visual Studio 2005 and VWD 2005 are ok on my Vista Business box. Expression Web too.
But VWD 2008 shows no toolbox-items when a page is open (aspx or html).
The preferences-window does not show options for the HTML-designer.
The tabs for split view and design-view are not there.
I had seen this behaviour in the beta-version, so i uninstalled the beta immediately.
The final version has the same issue on my machine.
I tried everything i could think of and tried every solution i could find on the net.
Uninstalled VWD 2008, re-installed.
Uninstalled VWD2008 and VWD 2005 plus all related stuff like MSDN Library...
Reinstalled VWD 2008.
Downloaded the ISO-file and re-installed from that source.
Manually installed WebdesignerCore.exe from the ISO.
But i am stuck now.
The HTML Designer or how it is called just does not get installed.
Suggestions are thet i should check Microsoft Web Authoring Component is installed.
It is not.
Mikhail suggests to manually install WCU\WebToolsCore\en-us in VS DVD and run WebToolsCore.exe.
Being a VWD user i don't have the VS DVD, but i have used the ISO file which should be the same stuff.
There is nothing like WebToolsCore.exe. In my ISO it is called
WebdesignerCore.exe. At least i presume this the file that Mikhail means. Is that right?
This issue is different. You don't even have Design tab as opposed to having working Source view and Design tab that does not work. In your case VS setup appears to be incorrect. Is markup getting colorized? Does CSS editing work? How's about JS files -
do they get colorized?
Non-working CSS intellisense means fpeditax.dll does not load for some reason. It is difficult to say why, but let's at least check file existence. Here is what I have on my machine:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Web Designer Tools\VWD: fpacutl.dll, fpcutl.dll, fpeditax.dll. Digitally signed, correct version 12.0.4518.1066. In C:\Program Files\Microsoft Web Designer Tools\VWD\1033 I have fpedsat.dll and fputlsat.dll.
All the files exist and the three of them have the same version number.
No, I don't have Office 2007 installed. I download and install the Open xml file converter for Office XP just for testing if it will solve the problem.
I have msxml2, 2r, 3, 3a, 3r, 6, 6r. But *no* msxml5.dll in Windows\system32.
Anyone have any idea about the problem? i really need to prove VS 2008 can be run on this machine...
Could Symantec antivirus/cient firewall cause the problem? It has NVidia Quadro NV 285 with newest driver. Some IT software may be installed. Google desktop. Office XP....
No, markup is not colorized. CSS editing does not work. JS files the same issue.
JS are not colorised either.
I agree of course that setup is incorrect or incomplete.
Tried it as a regular user with Admin-rights. Tried it as Admin. Tried it with UAC turned off.
Just beatme what is blocking it.
I do have Office 2007 installed as well as MS Expression Web.
I installed VMWare on my machine. And VWD 2008 can run in VMWare. I found it has a process running mscorsvw.exe. However, this process is not running on the host. Can it cause the design view problem?
I have the same problem. I can't use the split and designer view. I also tried to reinstall it and still there's no luck. Anyone knows how to fix this?

- Is there msxml5.dll in windows\system32?

I found msxml5.dll in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE11 and copied it to Windows\system32. But it doesn't solve the problem.
