    Hi Everybody,

I have created a list in sharepoint. In that list there is a field which I want to make read only or invisible when the user tries to add or edit a list item through sharepoint UI. I want this because that particular field gets populated through a webpart and direct data entry into that field is unnecessary for my project. Is there any way to make a sharepoint column (for me its a picture column) read only or invisible in the sharepoint UI.

    thank you,

    Arun Dutt

    Hello Everybody,

I have found the solution for my problem

I created the field using CAML. The field definition element <Field> has the following properties that can be used to show/hide the field in the UI.

    • ShowField
    • ShowInDisplayForm
    • ShowInEditForm
    • ShowInNewForm

As I know it SharePoint OTB only lets users set permission on a row of a list. To deal this shortage I am using SharePoint Column VIew Permission to set column permission as it gives me seveeral options like 'read only' and 'view permission'.

You can also use Infowise Smart List Pro which is a set of improvements for the OOTB capabilities of list or document library in sharepoint.

You can define a set of rules and permissions that will show, hide or make the column read only. And much more.
