i can see the email address in the generated tables, but i am wondering if it is 'safe' to update the email address directly though some custom sql, or will this mess things up given that information is stored via profiles, then into the database?

you can edit the email fields (Email & LoweredEmail) through custom sql or use
SomeUser = Membership.GetUser("SomeUserName")
SomeUser.Email = "email address"
Where Membership.GetUser will take the username as a string or the providerUserKey which is guid.

don't think through Membership API May be if you have UserId... you can try directly changing in DB table aspnet_Users
Make sure it is not affecting your role/Profile providers if you have any...
