I have strong skills in software development, but I need to become more with the networking buzwords and to grasp an understanding of them and how things work together. When people start talking about network access beyond the DMZ, I am a little lost. The
other day someone was chatting with someone about how internet access is limited in China. How it is limited etc. Anyway, this all sounds so foriegn to me. I would like to increase my knowledge of networking concepts, but I don't even know where to start.
Can anyone recommend a good book or some good websites?

Take a course in CCNA, which will bring you up with understanding any networking issue, plus help you understand many of the programming concepts as well such as binary, hex, oct..etc.
By the way, DMZ is Demilitarized zone and as the name implies you place a Computing Unit, into an area which is totally unprotected and has no controls of either a router, firewall or any other thing.
Network Access is limited in the sense of Controls in China, as they say GREAT FIREWALL OF CHINA, where all communications are monitored, but its not limited in terms of bandwidth as they have some of the fastest connections compared to many
other nations.
Please Mark Post that helped you as answer, also include a summary of what solved the problem as it helps others in similar situations

I'd recommend google for you. That's all you need really. But if google would die, there's still Wikipedia ;-)

The book for passing the CCNA exam is http://www.amazon.co.uk/CCNA-Exam-640-801-Preparation-Library/dp/1587200953
This book covers everything from basic onwards
