I was just wondering if anyone knows of a relatively cheap host where i can have a server that will mainly just be used for dev/testing. I'd like to start playing around with longhorn. Since it wont be running with anything under a real usage load, i dont
need uber hardware or mega amounts of bandwidth. I suppose the main thing i need is the ability to reinstall the OS as new builds come out or as i screw up the current build :)
How do you plan on reinstalling the OS on a hosted server...? And for waht you say you're looking for, buying yourself a server would be cheaper, easier and better.
well if the host can pop a dvd in the drive for me that would be cool. otherwise i'd have to go there and do it myself i suppose. So i should add that it would have to be a facility located in the LA, Calif area.
And yeah, building or buying a server myself might be an option. But i did want the ability to host non-essential sites on it for testing. I could do that from home but it wouldnt be ideal. Although, considering the number of parts i have laying around at
home, i might have enough to put together a low end server.
Best deal i've seen so far is from pihost.com which will colocate a 1u rackmount for $25/mo. $75/mo for a tower case.
We can provide a VPS for you which allows us to load up any OS you need in the virtual CD / DVD drive. Cost really depends on RAM so if you let me know I will give you a monthly price - should be a lot lower than your other options.
very cool. i think 512meg would be enough...maybe 1gb. Since i'm not planning on running anything heavy or using it for anything critical i dont think i'll need much ram.
If you want to test it out please let me know and I can setup a free trial week. The cost per month will be $40 USD for 512 MB RAM. This will give you 2 x 20 GB HDD's, 200 GB Bandwidth and a dedicated IP address. You can extras as you need them. Please email
me at mark@ultimahosts.net if you would like to test out our VPS solution.

For Longhorn you'll need a GIG in a VirtualServer environment.

Odd difference in price, and I'd think there's a catch to a colo for $25 a month. Restricted bandwidth, no services or something.
Jeff
in this case i dont care if its somewhat limited. as long as its up most of the time :) like i said this is mainly just something for me to play around with, so it doesnt have to be uber fast or anything.

Thanks for that Jeff. Seems a little resource hungry though.
Looking forward to the Data Center edition of Win2k3 where we can launch unlimited VPS's under the one license.
Cheers,
