Exactly: For example:
On the aspx page:
<asp:Label ID="MyLabelForText" runat="server" CssClass="MyStyle" />
On the code behind page (the aspx.vb page).. in the Page Load event (perhaps):

Yes we can do it, we can display text anywhere for the webpage using response.write.
check this code.
private void Button1_Click(object sender, System.EventArgs e)
Response.Write("<span id='Label1'' style='height:16px;width:120px;Z-INDEX: 102; LEFT: 288px; POSITION: absolute; TOP: 144px'>Ratnakar Dutt A.V</span>");
It display the text "Ratnakar Dutt A.V" in middle of the page.

In my earlier reply < has been posted as <. You would need to use <
Use below. I've just tested. It's working fine.
public partial class _Default : System.Web.UI.Page
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
Response.Write("<span id='Label1'' style='height:16px;width:120px;Z-INDEX: 302; LEFT: 388px; POSITION: absolute; TOP: 144px'>Select the User</span>");
