My project must make use of the Membership API and I'm happy with this. There will only be ten to twenty users of the system, and there will only be two roles. No user of Role "A" will be a user of Role "B", and vice versa.

So, in contrast to the data model, there will be a 1:1 relation between aspnet_Users and aspnet_Roles.

I'm currently designing a User edit form, and I wish to expose a drop-down list of all roles available in the application. When the form is saved, I want to write a record to the aspnet_UsersInRoles to store the UserID and the RoleID.

I want to use the Membership API to get the data for the form, drop-downs etc. The Roles.GetAllRoles only returns a string array, whereas I want a list or hashtable - e.g.

RoleID - RoleName

What is the correct approach to do this? Should I extend the Membership provider, or what? I can't believe I'm the first developer who needs to populate a DDL in this way!

Thanks

But that may not fit what I need.

I am trying to extend the role model of ASP.NET. I read some chapters of a book and that is absolutly feasible.

But I am missing out something, hope someone could tell me where to look.

A Role will have a collection of principles (maybe I misunderstand it) and principles define what a role can or can not do.

I am using a MS SQL backend. Both RoleManager and Membership providers are using that Database.

My question is, I don't understand what a principle is, it didn't appears in the Database Schema.

And if I modify access rule in ASP.NET administration tool, it save a rule inside web.config.

What I am trying to do is to show controls depending on user role.

For example a menu or a treeview, different users will see different subset of items.

And that setting information will be store inside my database.

Please show me where to dig. Thank you

Where is the Roles table?

Hi,

I'm using Membership and I can't find the Roles that I put in my users.
I am going to create the following roles using the ASP.NET Forms Roles and Membership providers:

Super Admin
Group Admin
Regular User

Group Admin and Regular User need to have access to the information only in their own groups.

For example, if the groups are: London, Berlin, Rome, then the Rome people should see only the Rome information, and have NO access to London and Berlin information. The different groups are going to be created by the Super Admin. When a new group comes in he creates it, and then creates the admins and users for it.

The roles describes above solve the problem of having different access to certain web pages, but I still don't have a way to distinguish if they belong to London or Berlin or Rome.

So, for this, I am creating fields in my database tables. For example, I have one table called "Contact" which holds the contacts for every group, that table looks something like this:

ContactId
First name
Last name
Phone
Address
GroupId

In "GroupId" I will save the Id of the group that contact belongs to (London, Berlin, or Rome).

And for the Users I will have to create a Profile table of my own and link it to the Membership users, so I can save this extra info for each user:

GroupId

In that field I will save the Id of the group that user belongs to.

In the contact and contact admin web pages I will run a check at the first of the code behind that checks the current logged in user's Group Id and then show only his contacts.

Ok this is the general Idea of my problem and my suggested solution.

I am posting this because I keep wondering if it is the right way to do it or should I create the following Membership Roles:

Super Admin
London Group Admin
Berlin Group Admin
Rome Group Admin
London Regular User
Berlin Regular User
Rome Regular User

My fear of doing so is that I will end up with dozens of roles after a while. And that I will have to create tools for changing the Membership Roles dynamically, is that recommended, safe, etc?

What do you think?

I have started work with the membership providers and roles, I want to use the standard sql based role provider but it only stored the role name, id and app name, is there a way to add an additional field forexample section that I can access for the provider api? or do I need to implement a custom role provider, if so is the above still possible? and can I get/use the code for the default sql role provider for the standard methods such as isUserinrole etc

Any direction would be appreciated

thanks

Requirement is for approx 5 roles, e.g. Admin, Account Manager, Dealer, Branch. Each role will have a different set of profile information attached. Also, dealers will be created by an account manager, will needs to be stored and reported on. Not sure the best way to set this up.

- Have the profile table set up with all the fields regardless of role, then on that roles editing page, get/set the profile custom from there(this would sit in the presentation layer). Profile would also contain the parent userId for mapping, or create a link table with userID and parentUserId. This would be then mapped by a user class(interface).

- Do not use the profile table and set up a separate table for each role profile instead. Create a user interface and then each role would have it's own class implementation.

As there are a set number of admin tabs and each function is directly tied to a role, checking security based on role is all that is required. My main concern is the initial architecture, and tying that in with the .net membership/role/profile providers.

Thanks in advance,
