  I took your advice: deleted DataObjectTypeName from the ObjectDataSource and it works like a charm. It's unfortunate that the GUI puts it there, but it's a small price to pay for the time saved. Thanks!

However, it seems that it's not required if you change the default to: <asp:WebPartManager ID="WebPartManager1" runat="server" > <Personalization Enabled="False" /> </asp:WebPartManager> Update: I've also found that the reason SQL Express isn't working any more with Web Parts and Login controls is because my computer recently had SQL Server Management Studio installed
