Strong-naming assemblies
I've read quite a lot about strong-naming assemblies but I feel I'm missing something and wondered if someone could help. As I understand it, I generate a key-pair and use it to do the strong-naming. I don't need to worry about distributing the public key because it's embedded in the assembly - is that right? And I must make sure I keep the private key secure, (i) to prevent abuse and (ii) in case I ever need to re-sign the assembly? One article made some oblique reference to it being

Re: C# and VB.net for ASP.net -- Which one is better for me
I started with VB.NET but now mostly do C#. Actually, it's pretty easy to switch between them: the .NET Framework is the same. I switched because most people who do what I do use C# and I found more sample code in C# that I was always having to translate. So, my recommendation is work out exactly what you need to do with it and especially where you expect to have problems. Then look round the forums and see what people with similar problems are using and see where you get the most solutions.

Re: Class that will serialize won't deserialize - can't work out why
Thanks for the reply. It's a custom class which includes some data from our ActiveDirectory. The field in question is supposed to be a Unicode string in the directory so I just stored it as a string in my class but it contains an encoded string or some binary or something. I guess I'm going to have to encode that field before I store it. I was just puzzled that XmlSerializer would serialize the data without objection but not deserialize it.

Class that will serialize won't deserialize - can't work out why
I'm using the method shown at the end of this post to serialize and deserialize various objects as part of my testing for my web service. Up until now, it's worked ok. With my current test data (which includes some nasty stuff) it's refusing to deserialize the data. I get a: System.InvalidOperationException with Message: "There is an error in XML document (171, 42)." and an InnerException: System.Xml.XmlException - {"'\a', hexadecimal value 0x07, is an invalid character

Re: How to return class as original class not proxy version of class
Thanks for the reply and the detailed explanation. I wish there was a 'forums.asp.net' for my main area of work! You're right. I removed the proxy class that's being passed back and forth via the web service and added a using statement so that it could use the original class which I guess is what you meant by server-side class. I understand what you're saying and why you mentioned Java now. In this case, I'm not writing a line-of-business app but a utility to simplify our

Re: How to return class as original class not proxy version of class
No, this is not the right way to do it. Using ASMX services, the client should be using the proxy type, not the service type.
??? I didn't understand your terms. What does wdsl.exe produce (assuming you're implying it doesn't produce the proxy type)?
Consider - if your client were written in Java, it would not be using the service type.
What's Java? :-) (Okay, so I know what it is but I've
