Is the use of this internal exception class a good practice?
I am working with some code from MSDN. In the NorthwindEmployee class, which is a typical object with typical properties for an employee, it has the code below. This is the first time I've seen this done. Is this a good thing to include in the class for a business object? internal class NorthwindDataException: Exception { public NorthwindDataException(string msg) : base (msg) { } } I'm guessing that it isn't the most ideal way, though convenient, to handle exceptions. I also wonder if

Should I be using the DBNull.Value field?
I just saw some code that used the DBNull.Value field for the initializiation of an ID field which is the PK field for the Employees table in the Northwind db. I assume this field is auto increment but don't know for sure. This has made me wonder if I should be initializing my ID fields with the DBNull.Value in my C# that are auto increment in the db. The following is the way I've been doing it. If I'm doing an insert, for a customer that has an ID as the PK in the db, I don't pass

Re: Should I be using the DBNull.Value field?
Thanks for the responses. I think I'll continue to do it the way I've been doing it. Is there any reason the code I mentioned use the DBNull.Value?

Re: Is the use of this internal exception class a good practice?
I thought there was a better way that is more robust and a better design choice when it comes to dealing with exceptions, such as building an exception base class. I hope this example is reasonably accurate. I'm reaching because I haven't done this yet.

Re: Is the Wrox book that builds The Beer House worth reading?
Thanks for the MVC suggestion. I do want to look into it in the future. I don't think I would be wasting my time by reading the 2.0 version of the book. No it's not as up to date with the technologies that it uses, compared to the 3.5 version, but I think it is still applicable. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Do you agree?

Has anyone read and built both the new and the old Beer House books and projects?
I'm debating between reading the new and the old Beer House books. Is there anyone out there that has read both of them? If so, can you please share some insight on your experience with them. There seem to be a lot of issues with the new one, way more than the old one. If I do the new one then I would be doing it in C# even though it is written in vb. Does anyone have any opinions?

Will I have issues running the original Beer House project in VS 2008?
I downloaded the source for the original Beer House project that targets ASP.net 2.0. In the readme.txt file it says that it was built with VS2005. I'm running VS 2008 Pro. I've tried converting some small projects that were built with VWD 2005 to VS 2008 and had some issues. I suspect the same type of thing will happen when I run/install this project. I would like to know what to expect. Has anyone run this with VS 2008? Did you have any issues with this?

What version of ASP.net comes with VS2008 Pro?
I'm running VS 2008 Pro which is using version 3.5 sp1 of the .NET framework. I don't know what version of ASP.net this uses though. Can someone tell me which version of ASP.net this uses and/or how to check this myself? Thanks.
