    Hi all, I had this problem too. I tried everything stated above, and still no success. Resolved it by simply rebuilding the website from scratch under a new project. Started with the simplest site, ie, a login page and a test.htm and membership storage of user info in ASPNETDB.MDF, and tested access to the test.htm with and without a correct password, ensuring login worked when it should. Then added functionality in easily reversed steps until login failed. Then reversed the offending step and put

    Hi Avenue, In VWD 2005 Express, I had been unable to run menu, Web s ite, ASP.NE T Configuration (the Web Site Administration Tool) without getting the following message: "An error was encountered. Please return to the previous page and try again." The message had no further hints of the problem's source. Thanks to a kind fella named Bob ( bob_m10 on 04-25-2006 on forums.microsoft.com/MSDN) I discovered that the problem was my path. In my case, I had a '#' character in the path to my web site folder
