  • Re: Visual Web Developer is UTTERLY useless.

The theme of this post is crystal clear ... it's about the route between VWD and SQL Server. Your reply mentions 'Detach, Attach, Backup, Restore' ... fine ... but why not respond to the request by either briefly explaining the method or providing links to where the 'route' is clearly defined. Start here ... finish here ! Claiming you 'have finally met one person who cannot follow simple instructions .. you don't see a problem ... it is not complicated' sounds rather
  • Re: Visual Web Developer is UTTERLY useless.

I have been posting 'step by step' requests all over the web. So far all I have got is a silence. If anyone responds to any of my posts in offering a 'Newbie Guide' I will post the link here. For those who are, like me, are getting tired of waiting you might like to try three possible routes out of the circle : SQL Management - http://www.valesoftware.com/ (7 day trial download) SQLCMD - http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms166559.aspx Codeplex - http://www.codeplex.com/Wiki
  • Re: Visual Web Developer is UTTERLY useless.

Hi Ian ... you started an interesting topic. Yes I have deployed a site using VWD but only by asking my provider (liquidsix) to insert the MDF's. I then played with the databases using SQL Server Management and found I wanted to make changes to login / roles etc which I could not do in SSM. So bravely I pulled the databases off and had a go myself ... but can't put the MDF's back. Going to spend the weekend reading SQL Server 2005 for Dummies ... in the hope that by sometime next week
  • Re: Visual Web Developer is UTTERLY useless.

Hi Michael If you read all the pre-download stuff on VWD that is the impression you get. The truth is all the pages can be moved easily but placing the database files (mdf's) into Server 2005 is an ongoing nightmare. Picking up on the earlier point - I agree that the hosting providers need to provide a lot more information. Most will load the MDF's for you but if you are trying to learn ASP you want to make frequent changes, adding new tables etc then it soon becomes impractical. Understanding
  • Re: Visual Web Developer is UTTERLY useless.

Well .. I agree with the theme of your post. Likewise I have spent days trying to work out how to move MDF files from SQL Express across to SQL 2005. I have searched the web, hunted through ASP and Microsoft, posted requests for a 'step by step' guide on a number of forums but without any response. Let's be honest VWD is great ... but it makes it very easy to believe we are making progress when in fact there is a mountain to climb ... it's called SQL. At least someone is reading the
  • Re: Announcing - SQL Server Database Publishing Wizard CTP 1

Does the SQL Server Hosting Toolkit work alongside Visual Web Developer ? Will it transfer ASPNETDB.MDF across to a shared SQL 2005 server - without having to write stacks of code ? Will new ASP users be able to use it ? Good to see that Microsoft is responding, otherwise you are going to frustrate a lot of VWD newbies .... Just seen that DiscountASP.NET have a SQL 2005 Attach MDF Tool ... it seems they have recognised that thousands of new VWD user are having real problems moving databases from
  • Re: Newbie: How do I get my VWD Express site to work with host??

AGREE ... VWD is a great front end... well documented, great tutorials. You learn fast and then you fall into this massive void. Let me explain (and pick up on a number of the previous posts) the problem is SQL. Once you have a great site running locally there isn't a single, easy to follow, step by step, keep it simple guide to taking ASPNETBD.MDF and moving it onto a Server. I have read (and tried to understand) loads of 'above my head' pages on doing really clever things with SQL,
  • Re: Visual Web Developer & Server 2005

Thanks Lori. 1) I opened 'Detaching and Attaching Databases' ... the content immediately lost me. I have detached the ASPNETDB.mdf but I don't see the route I am trying to follow. Very confused !!! What I think I am trying to do is split out ASPNET DB into components that will run on Server 2005 (is that at least correct ?) I tried running aspnet_regsql.exe (but without any luck). I downloaded SQL Server Management Studio Express in the hope that would help me breakdown ASPNETDB no luck
  • Visual Web Developer & Server 2005

Yes I am a newby (or is that newbie) and this is my first post. My Visual Web Developer site work really well on my PC, I read the books took it slowly, created logins and sql tables and then found a good hosting company with Server 2005 ... I though I was one step away from the road to success ... then I hit the big brick wall. Spent hours on Google trying to find some answers without joy ... all I found were lots of users with the same or similar problems ... and some answers that caused more problems
