  How would I do it at the shared host level? no access to the server or iis itself really, like an asp script that would have an include to do the auth check which looks at the password file and sees if the username and pass is there

  i tied it into my multiple domains tutorial here: http://www.airdepth.com/site/OpenSourceSupport/Windows/DotNetNuke/Advanced/tabid/66/Default.aspx Here is the relevant part. You need a way to get the domain to go to the subdirectory automatically. I liked the little asp redirect script at dotdesk. It is called the ASP 301 Redirect for Multiple Domains and the link is here: http://www.dotdesk.com/portal/Downloads/tabid/177/Default.aspx

  the swirl chat is great for shared hosting, just the one dll upload, module install and we config edit and you are done, ajax is some cool stuff
