KB973917 nuked HTTP service on IIS 6.0
The day before yesterday, Dec 10, Windows 2003 notified me that six critical updates should be installed. I didn't give it much thought and OK'd the install. After the system rebooted, I got error 503 on my website : "Service Unavailable". After uninstalling all updates, my website was back to normal. I then re-installed all updates one at a time. They all allowed the HTTP service on IIS 6.0 to run OK ...except the last one : KB973917, which again nuked the HTTP service with the
There are currently a couple of articles that can help you with this.
I'm downloading SP2 now but the quick fix is to uninstall KB973917. That gets the web server up and running right away. Thanks !

Re: Config file?
re: !> im looking for a config file where i can store !> my functions instead of rewriting them in every page. The best solution for that is to write a helper dll and call its functions. Read my reply to a similar question here : http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.dotnet.framework.aspnet/browse_thread/thread/6641ada42ce6f25e/59036dd5e24b6bdd?hl=en&q=command+line+dll+author:nomailreplies%40nowhere.com It's the 3rd post from the top...

Re: Setting up IIS in 2008
Since the page does load, as you say, IIS is apparently working fine. CSS is a browser function, so the IIS server has nothing to do with it. Questions for you... 1. Have you uploaded your .css file(s) to the server ? 2. Can your server find the .css file(s) via the relative path specified ? If this is an example : <link href="default.css" type="text/css" rel="stylesheet" /> ...is "default.css" located in the same directory as your .aspx file ? 3. Can

re: !> Port 60 is blocked I assume you mean port 80 ? Have you asked your ISP whether it's blocking port 80 ? re: !> When i trying to start my server on port 90 all works fine. IIS is working, then. re: !> Port forwarding work good. I configurati it on 80 and 89 port Are you sure ? Some routers don't let themselves be configured to open port 80. Have you checked to see if your firewall is preventing traffic to port 80 ? re: !> router asus have 192.168.1.1:80 What is your XP box's

Re: Starter kit listed twice in my templates.
Windows Server 2008 isn't a factor. 1. Are you using VS 2005, VS 2008 or VS 2010 ? 2. What do you have at : Drive:\VisualStudioInstallDir\Common7\IDE\ProjectTemplatesCache\VisualBasic\Starter Kits ...and/or similar paths ?

Re: A compatible version of Visual Studio 2008 was not detected on the system. This update is designed for only the Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 (ENU) product family, and is not compatible with any Express editions.
Your problem is not removing VWD 2008. Your problem is that you received an upgrade version of Visual Studio 2008 which does not install over Express editions of VS 2008...and VWD is an Express edition. In other words, you need a real version of VS 2008 installed so your upgrade can be installed. I'm not sure if the trial version counts, but you've got nothing to lose (except some download time) by trying. Try downloading the trial version and installing that : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads

Re: Customize App_Offline.htm for Visual Studio Publishing
re: !> App_Offline.htm You can customize "App_Offline.htm" any way you want to. The only requirement is that the filename remains the same.
