  I saw LINQ In Action but it seemed geared more toward readers who have used LINQ extensively. LINQ in Action is here to help you to get started with LINQ. You don't need to know LINQ beforehand to read the book. However, you do need to know C# 2 or VB 8. The book starts by presenting all the new features of C# 3 and VB 9, then moves on to LINQ. Developers already using LINQ will learn a lot from LINQ in Action, but it is written also for beginners with the technology.

• AjaxToolkit slows page display

  I've noticed that using extenders from the AjaxToolkit alters the way pages are displayed. The display of pages that contain an extender results seems to be slower than other pages, or at least this is the impression it leaves in terms of user experience. Here is a small test you can do to see what I mean: Go to the AjaxToolkit home page Click on items in the list of samples on the left Pay attention to the way the page is displayed.   I don't think it's worth going through these troubles when Microsoft can easily fix the problem by adding a test in its Javascript to get the same behavior as before the Release Candidate.

  It's better if the UpdateProgress control checks by itself if there is an UpdatePanel or not, so this control can be used more easily. It's not a good solution to have to create two MasterPages, one with an UpdateProgress and one without. It's much easier to use a dummy UpdatePanel in the MasterPage as a workaround until the error is fixed.

  It's interesting to have an UpdateProgress in a MasterPage to show when a partial update is in progress, independently of the page on which it happens.

  An error is not a good solution! We should be able to have an UpdateProgress in a MasterPage, and use this MasterPage both with pages that have an UpdatePanel and pages that don't.

  I confirm this problem. I too added a dummy UpdatePanel to my MasterPage and the error is gone.

  I would add that PreInit doesn't exist on Master Pages so it's not even a solution in this case...
