Designer for Custom WebControl
Hi all, I've been trying to write my first CompositeControlDesigner for a Custom WebControl that I came across on the web. It is not a complex control, however my designer does not update in design mode, when I change a property on the below control. What am I missing? Here is the Control. using System; using System.Text; using System.Data; using System.Configuration; using System.Web; using System.Web.Security; using System.Web.UI; using System.Web.UI.WebControls; using System.Web.UI.WebControls

Efficiency of many ObjectDataSources per Page
Hi all, I've just completed a couple of simple data-driven sites in which I used a 'standard' approach, GridView, FormView, ObjectDataSource, TableAdapters, DataSets etc. Nothing complicated at all. What struck me was that when I have a database table with many foreign keys I end up creating several ObjectDataSources per page, and hence several connections to SQL Server. I know the 'one or many connections per page' is an age old debate and that with connection pooling the connections I use are not

GridView EmptyDataTemplate and EmptyDataText
Hi all, I hope someone can help me out here. I've been trying to get the EmptyDataTemplate to render its contents, however whenever I have 0 records in my ObjectDataSource, nothing is rendered. I have checked in GridView1_DataBound and there are definately 0 rows there, so the EmptyDataTemplate should render, shouldn't it? I've tried setting EmptyDataText declaratively and programmatically, and just having a label in the EmptyDataTemplate, all to no avail. I have resorted to having a div on my page

Provider Model with WinForms apps
Hi all, I have been looking at the usage of the Provider Model (see here and here ) in DotNetNuke and CommunityServerForums, and wondering how this pattern could be implemented for a WinForms application. With DNN and CS, the constructor of the Provider base class is cached in HttpRuntime.Cache. How can I achieve the same with WinForms? Thanks! A.

Re: Architectural question: Web Services vs. .Net Remoting
Hi, Perhaps an over-simplification, but I think the key factor is if you are doing cross platform computing. If you are then Web Services, if you are just doing .NET to .NET then remoting. Here are a couple of interesting MSDN articles: Performance Comparison: .NET Remoting vs. ASP.NET Web Services ASP.NET Web Services or .NET Remoting: How to Choose Ingo Rammer has an interesting article on .NET Remoting Use-Cases and Best Practices , and a short presentation on .NET Remoting vs. Web Services .
