  Sometimes the order of clearing them is a factor, make sure to first remove the value so nothing can inherit, yet remember that you may already bounded to the textbox. Make sure you add a breakpoint to add the new value and then bound it to the textbox

  There are 2 ways, one read the content of the word file and injected on a richtextbox control, there are many available out there http://freetextbox.com is as the name says, free! You can also push the file to the browser and hope for the user having Office installed, will open on the browser if you change the header to word type on the response so the browser will open it

  ViewState will solve your problem, however looks like you are refreshing the window in javascript, that will not keep the viewstate for your page. Check you are doing postbacks to the server.
