Re: Sample Custom Profile Provider
Just saw this thread. There is a good example of a custom membership provider included with DotnetNuke ( www.dotnetnuke.com ). Even if you aren't going to use the portal software, there's source code to tear apart :-)

Shawn or someone from the core team should pin a post and place a blurb on the Mothership about this !!! I think this is good marketing buzz !!!

Re: Is there a way to make a child portal private so that it can not be accessed by simply typing in the url?
a quick way to do this would be to write a small module (or skin object) that checks the "referralURL" to see if it came from the site that you want it to come from or the child site. If not, redirect the browser to the parent site.

Re: DNN Authentication
You could also set up an http handler that would detect if the IP address is int he range and authenticated the user using the existing membership provider. this would be a smaller change I would think.

Re: Slightly OT: Customer Feedback @ Microsoft
Joe, We should talk to the folks over at Telligent about adding it to the forums... Rob used to be at Microsoft so I am sure he wants to adopt thier emerging patterns and practices :-)
