Re: Using WebPartManager without database
If you write a custom personalization provider, you can store and retrieve the data however you'd like (database, web service, xml file, etc.). You could even store it in memory, though you'd lose the data when the application shut down. For most practical purposes you either want personalization disabled, or else you want to store it in some persistent way. -Mike

Re: Using WebPartManager without database
If you want to enable the personalization-related features of WebParts, you need to use some sort of personalization provider to store the data. You can implement a custom personalization provider to store the data however you'd like.

Re: Workaround for using Web Parts with AJAX 1.0 UpdatePanel
As I said above, you need to use the latest version of the ASP.NET Futures. It's a separate download available on www.asp.net .

My solution should do exactly what you describe.

Re: Workaround for using Web Parts with AJAX 1.0 UpdatePanel
Works for me. I'm using .Net Framework 3.5 RTM and the latest version of the ASP.NET Futures. Here's my sample page: <% @ Register Assembly ="Microsoft.Web.Preview" Namespace ="Microsoft.Web.Preview.UI.Controls.WebParts" TagPrefix ="cc1" %> < asp : ScriptManager ID ="ScriptManager1" runat ="server" /> < asp : UpdatePanel ID ="up1" runat ="server"> < ContentTemplate > < cc1 : WebPartManager ID

Re: Building a site like the sample "www.pageflakes.com" with atlas and webparts tech????
Using this approach your WebPart would not officially be in "edit" mode. And there is no need to call anything like ApplyChanges(). You are managing the editing yourself at this point.

Re: Cannot deserialize the blob of personalization data associated with the current page
However, the token "0x1a" is no longer generated by the serialization code. It was generated in ASP.NET 2.0 Beta2, but not after that. So the only way you would hit this bug is if you are deserializing data that was serialized in ASP.NET 2.0 Beta2. If you have a repro that uses the current serialization code I would love to see it. Thanks, -Mike

Re: Cannot deserialize the blob of personalization data associated with the current page
This looks like a separate issue. Are you calling Deserialize() from a web app or a console app? It looks like the serialized data contains a type that was in the App_Code directory, and for some reason this assembly cannot be loaded when you are calling Deserialize(). -Mike

Re: Cannot deserialize the blob of personalization data associated with the current page
Thanks for reporting this. However, it appears that codepath in ObjectStateFormatter is never used. Are you seeing a bug?

Re: Workaround for using Web Parts with AJAX 1.0 UpdatePanel
The current version of the AJAX Futures has a bug when using WebParts inside an UpdatePanel. We are investigating and this will be fixed in a later release of the AJAX Futures. Thanks. -Mike
