Edit permission in dotnetnuke

I just want to know about the edit permission for the users on the pages in Dotnetnuke.

I have to give the user the edit permission for one module on a page and hide other page management controls for that user.How should I do this?Can I change edit permission for the administrator?

For this I also added in New Web.Config in My "DNN Module Folder". but when I add this I get an Exception. Any one tell me how to Add The Configuration Setting in Web.Config running at Client side.

Weird behavior of DotNetNuke menu in asp.net 2.0 application.

We have developed the application using DotNetNuke 4.5.5 and ASP.Net 2.0. It's working fine on development server. We have now deployed it on Production Server. We have used dotnetnuke sole part menu to display various menu items. Here is the weird behavior - Sometimes suddenly menu disappears. There is no specific flow on which menu disappears. Out of 9 menu items, it shows only 3 menus. And when we add any new page or if we clear the cache it restores the menu back to normal. Not sure what is wrong here. We have verified the IIS settings too and those are correct.Anyone knows what can be this problem and the solution? Please let me know if anyone knows the answer ASAP.

Hi I am using urlmappings for redirecting urls in my DotNetNuke site.

For below rule it is not working properly and showing the querystring .

So if user enters http://localhost/dotnetnuke4/category-new/ddefault.aspx they are going to http://localhost/dotnetnuke4/?Contenttype=CatArticle&tabID=57&CatID=4

why I am getting the values in query string

If I use the rule like

All works well . Do I have to do anything more ?

Intermittent DNN problem

I have a DNN 4.3.4 site that works fine most of the time... sorta. I am a noob w/asp.net. I appreciate any help that can be given. Please let me know if this is the incorrect forum.
About 20 times a day when the site is being browsed, I get the following error (on local and remote machines):
(Also, the problem goes away by itself after some time but I cannot pin down how long or it always goes away after I recycle the IIS server)

Needed - DNN Super User Protecting Pages from Admin User

One of the things that I need to do is to allow the Super User Account in DNN to remove the “edit” permission from the Admin User like I have shown below. The ultimate goal is that as a Super User I have the ability to remove the edit option for an entire page and that the end result is that on a page by page basis I have the ability as a Super User to absolutely 100% protect the content on a given page in the state that it is in from any other users affecting it.

A few examples of this tool/protection/process in action would be:

1. The Super User protected a DNN page called “Support” from the Admin and all other groups from being able to change it. An Admin user creates a new page for the portal and while building the page, decides to select the option under Advanced Settings within the module that says “Display Module on All Pages”. Even though the Admin User selected this option, these requests would not be published on the “Support” page that was protected.

2. The Super User protected a DNN page called “Support” using this hypothetical tool. An Admin user tries to move the location or delete this page but cannot because they do not have edit permissions.

If my logic, thought process and theory serves me correctly; couldn’t all of this be achieved by simply having the ability to remove the “Edit” Checkbox below on a given page?

If not, what would accomplish what I am hoping to achieve as described above?

I have been looking for, but can't find, a tutorial on how to edit the menu look and feel. I found a post in this forum with the following attributes of the runat=server tag. DNN 2.1.2 with SQL Express 05

All,

Can anyone confirm or deny whether legacy version 2 instances of DNN will run against SQL Express 2005? Without writing an expository dissertation, suffice it to say that we've got a custom module for mapping that we just haven't found the time to move to rev. 4 yet.

I've taken the usual tack in setting up DNN and at initial site load all of the tables and stored procs build, however nothing ends up in the database (i.e, the Portals, Users, Roles and various other base entries don't go in). It seems as though the SqlDataProvider is unable to actually write data to the database. I've tried this with a unique DB user with dbo permissions, ASPNET with dbo permissions, and NETWORKSERVICE as dbo as well. I've also tried impersonation with a trusted connection. This is just a test envt. for now to see if we can roll out a site to a client without a SQL license and save them a few bux (and avoid MSDE throttling) so both the app and database are on my machine for now...no firewalls, etc.

Some details:

Win XP Pro (Dell factory machine), .Net 1.1 and .Net 2.0, tons of other DNN sites running in various versions just fine.

Virtual Dir IS set to use 1.1, permissions all look OK in the database (right now its wide open) while I troubleshoot.

Connection string must be correct since the db is building. In fact any number of variations including unique login SqlConnection format will build the db and stored procs.

All appears to we well, yet nothing is getting written to the DB. FWIW, the database builds and then I get the "localhost/myDNNsite does not exist in the database" page. The portals table is empty.

Any ideas?

DNN 3.2.2 without MS CDO client layer

DNN mail test button produces "can't access CDO object" popular exception.

I've heard about "OpenSmtp" (http://forums.asp.net/thread/409891.aspx)...
I thought a "mail provider string" could be changed in web.config; but i did not find it.

I was wondering how i could change the CDO mail client layer with minimum re/compilation.

But now (in DNN 3.3.x) some methods have moved from DotNetNuke.Data.SqlDataProvider to DotNetNuke.Security.Membership.Data.SqlDataProvider and now I have no idea how to make it work. I can't find the new provider's definition in web.config file.

How to replace original provider of class DotNetNuke.Security.Membership.Data.SqlDataProvider with my own one?

So I've created a custom scheduler client to be run every 5 minutes and I noticed that it was running very sporadically. It will run 7-10 times in a 5-20 second interval every 5 mins... very sporadic. Anyways, I removed it from the Schedule and tried re-adding it hoping that would fix everything. This is where it gets weird, I changed the interval to run every 10 minutes, but it still runs 7-10 times in a 5-20 second interval every 5 mins... wtf!? It's almost like the DNN Scheduler is trying to add a ScheduleHistory to my old scheduler that i removed. Running DNN 3.1.1 BTW, anyone else had this problem? Thanks in advance.

Restrict number of logins

In DotNetNuke (v3.2.2) is it possible to restrict the number of times a specific user login can be used at the same time. E.g We want to restrict the use of user 'xyz123' to a maximum of 10 logins at any one time. As an alternative, we could restrict all users to only one login at a time and create 10 different logins, but this is not the preferred route. This would need to be configurable on a per user login.

DNN 4.03 and Citrix authentication

I'd like to use DNN 4.0.3 as our company portal and create a page (tab) for Citrix Web Access and a page for Outlook Web Access. I don't want system to ask user name and password for OWA and Citrix. So basically, portal authentication will be Windows authenticatd and it will pass thru this info to OWA and Citrix.

Has anyone done something similar? Any pointers?

Friendly URLs for multiple parent portals - limitation of SiteUrls.config?

Hi everyone,

I've got two parent portals sharing the same installation of DotNetNuke - same source code folder, database and so on. Both of the domain names are added in the same website in IIS, resulting in requests for both being picked up by the same dnn code. The two portals are also present in the Portals system with the corresponding domain names. Great, this is really cool. As a developer, I only have one set of source code to update when I fix bugs... I mean... add new features.

The problem I'm having regards friendly urls, though. Suppose I want to have the following redirections:

www.domain1.com/Privacy.aspx -> www.domain1.com/tabid/123/Default.aspx
www.domain2.com/Privacy.aspx -> www.domain2.com/tabid/456/Default.aspx

In SiteUrls.config, I can't simpy have the rules like this:

      <LookFor>.*/Privacy.aspx</LookFor>
      <SendTo>~/Default.aspx?TabId=123</SendTo>
    </RewriterRule>
    <RewriterRule>
      <LookFor>.*/Privacy.aspx</LookFor>

    </RewriterRule>

They would both conflict with each other. How can I include the domain name in the rewriter rule? It could just be my limitated knowledge of regular expressions that's holding me back here.

We only recently added the second portal and it looks like I'll need to adapt all the existing rewriter rules for the first portal to make sure they are not applied to the second.

(Thought for the future: To improve on performance and also avoid these conflicts, it might be an idea to have a separate siteurls.config file in each portal folder, such as ~/Portals/0/SiteUrls.config, ~/Portals/1/SiteUrls.config, etc. so that only the relevant set of rules are processed on a given request.)

Any thoughts on this?

Custom Host Menu for a particular user group

I am creating custom host menu which will appear on all portals and visible to a specufic user group (other than Host). But when I add a page it sets PortalID in table Tabs. Whereas PortalID for hosts tabs is Null, so when I set PortalID of my pages to Null it stops appearing.

So I guess somewhere DNN is checking usergroup and if it is Host then it displays the host menu. If this is true then I would like to test for my user group as well. So my question is where it is being done?

In short how do I add menu entries which appear on all portals when a particular user group logs in just like host menu.

DNN code is so complex that it is nearly impossible to find anything :(

How to Recompile UserProfile.vb

Hello:

I have integrated my member application so that portions of it can be ported as DotNetNuke modules. This includes syncing up my user tables within DNN and my membership application. Everything is working fine except that some of my members do not have last names (ie Companies, Organizations). DNN I know rejects users without a last name (since its a required field) so when a last name isnt provided when I create the DNN User I fill it in with a dummy last name. "WEBAPP_USER"

I noticed in the UserProfile.vb class there is a property

                Return FirstName & " " & LastName
            End Get
End Property

I want to put in a

Replace(FirstName & " " LastName, "WEBAPP_USER", "")

so that when the full name is displayed on the website it leaves out the WEBAPP_USER text since this is only for filler anyway.

How do i change that and recompile that into a DLL. I have Visual Studio 2005 so I have the ability just need to know the proper steps

Hyperlink on Flash in bannermodule (DNN 3.1.1)

Hi,

for a site of us which is built in DNN 3.1.1 we like to see a Flash-banner. It is no problem to have a swf-movie in the standardbannermodule. So far so good. Except that the hyperlink doesn't work. I also tried an avi-movie, which is of course a bit strange, but it was a test. I got the next remark from the system.

File type avi is not valid in this context. Valid File Types Include: jpg,jpeg,jpe,gif,bmp,png,swf

So swf must be possible. There are more posts in which no one has managed to use a swf-file in the bannermodule. Is there a crack who knows how to handle this?

Updating table owners in Stored Procedures

I am having allot of problems trying to restore my DNN site from a backup.

I started by importing the database file and copying the backup files. The database name and user is different from the original so I updated the web.config file to the correct values for the new database.

When I imported the database it automatically set all the objects to the database user but DNN requires that and objects with the prefix aspnet_ have the owner "dbo". So I have changed all those objects to have the owner "dbo".

This got me a little further, however now all the stored procedures refer to the old database user and not the new user (e.g. dbo1234.UpdateSchema should be dboNew1234.UpdateSchema). Is there any way to update all the stored procedures with the new user. I was thinking something like an SQL statement that searched through all the stored procedures for the old user string and replaced it with the new one.

I hope someone can help me with this as it is causing me allot of grief. Most of the posts on restoring from backup make it sound easy but I guess they do not take into account a change of database user.

I am a little restricted on what I can do as the website is on a shared hosting.

UsersOnline Core Localization File Not Found

Note the file name - ".ascx.resx". Any idea what the problem may be?

User Account not displaying users in newest DNN (3.3)

I downloaded the 3.3 version of DNN and noticed that when I try to add users through the user account page they get added to the database but they do not get displayed in the user account module. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

Build & Deploying DNN Source!

Hi All,

I am pretty new to DNN, probably a month old.

I tried taking the DNN source version 4.0.3 and did a couple of changes (listed below).

1. I did modify some DNN controls to suite my requirements.

2. I have created and added a new skin.

3. I have created and added a new container.

4. Created a new portal using the wizard, choosing my skin/container.

5. Created couple of pages & custom modules.

6. Created a new database for the modules to interact.

Now, all set and working in DEV environment.

I have few things in my mind when i deploy it to the PROD.

1. I dont want to deploy the source.

2. But i need all the dnn controls that is customized by me without the source. A simple example can be the dnn treeviewcontrol. The modified version should be part of the build (The reason why am not taking the Install version of DNN to deploy).

So, I tried three different things to port it to PROD server. But i encountered few issues.

1. I tried publishing the website in the DEV server and copied the entire content from the precompiled folder and tried deploying it in the PROD vir dir...and created the database, modified the web.config to target the PROD database. Placed my own install file at the Install folder...lets say MyCustom.install.config. Modified the web.config to target my install config..something like this <add key="InstallTemplate" value="MyCustom.install.config" />. The "MyCustom.install.config" will have my own custom portal that has to be created. I took all the PA's of all the modules and placed it at the Install/Module folder ( I did this because am forcing the module installation since the PROD is having a completely new DB).

When i tried to access the portal, I was getting a "The page cannot be displayed" error.

2. I did follow the same steps as that of 1) except modfying the web.config to target my Install template config file. ie, I just left the default DNN install template which is...."<add key="InstallTemplate" value="DotNetNuke.install.config"/>". It just got installed and could access the default DNN portal. I tried clicking the wizard to configure my custom template and i got an error (the moment i clicked it)

3. Installed the install version (which doesn't contain any of my custom code), and added every bit of thing manually, like adding my skin/container/placing my images, modifying the web.config and i have now 1000's of steps to do without having my custom controls.

This is my first deployment try on to PROD, so any help would be highly appreciated. To summarize, my reqts are :

1. How to modify the DNN source code and deploy only the installables.

2. How to make use of the custom install config files. My install config is so clean but still it sucs.

3.Is there any build tool that is specific to DNN.

4. More importantly how to upgrade to new version without affecting the data. The DNN site doc is not updated for each release.

5. I feel there is a lot of things that has to be done manually. My portal deployment doc is too lengthy....Is there any automated tool we have already??

6. Is it possible to write our own control which inherits from DNN control? I am facing a lot of reference issues.
