Hi Will,

I have requested Jodohost to add 'settler' to all the Windows servers specifically to remedy the DNN installation issues we are facing. As far as I know, WIN9 and WIN12 servers are OK. WIN11 is still not working and Jodohost support has replied to me stating that they are investigating the issue further. I am not sure if they have attempted to add the 'settler' group to the ASP.NET Temp Files directory though - In my past support requests to them asking them to add 'settler', they seem to have brushed me off and stating that it was my fault somehow that the errors were occurring. (But 'miraculously' WIN9 and WIN12 started working after I was blamed for the problem).

Please note that Jodohost is still probably one of the better shared/reseller hosts out there with fantastic support response-time. I still choose to stay with them because I know that they are continually improving their services - and one day, hopefully very soon, we will rid this permission problem permanently.

I also contacted Jodohost, as they are my provider as well. I recently started a conversation in their support forums (Customer Only) to request the granting of 'modify' access to the 'settler' group on the 2003 Winservers. We'll see what happens.

We had a conversation with Shaun Walker on this topic a few days ago and here is his feedback on it.

Almost immediately after we forwarded this information to our hosting provider, Jodohost, the problem 'took care of itself'. Were not exactly sure what was done, if anything, however, everything now seems to work exactly as expected.

I believe the root of your problem is this error ( which shows up in your Log over and over again ):

Policy not being applied to reference at this time (private, custom, partial, or location-based assembly bind).

Like I mentioned on our telephone call, this error could be related to many things – all pointing to environmental/configuration issues. I would highly doubt that the error has anything to do directly with DotNetNuke or the H-Spere Control Panel. It could be related to Trust ( Code Access Security ), conflicting assemblies in the Global Assembly Cache ( GAC ), an invalid ASP.NET Framework config, etc…

I Googled the error and here are my best suggestions:

http://www.error-bank.com/microsoft.public.dotnet.framework.webservices/3543_Thread.aspx ( indicates an ACL permissions issue with the temp ASP.NET folder )

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;329065 ( indicates that if the Indexing Service is running on the box, it could cause issues ).

Daniel, you are a genius!!!

I've been hosting a number of DNN sites on a dedicated server (Windows 2003, IIS 6, Matrix control panel), and on EVERY installation, the modules listed at the start of this thread were missing. I never took much notice of it, because the only module I needed that didn't install was the Text/HTML module, so I just installed it manually afterwards.

However, on a recent site, I installed the CataLooK Ecommerce module, and was having problems with the language translations. Basically, whatever language I chose on the Language Switcher, it was always displaying the default language string. I've basically spent 4 days solid trying to work out why it was happening, performing lots of different tests.

It was working fine on my development machine, so I thought it must be something to do with the permissions on the live server. I tried every setting I could think of, and then found this thread!

I have now given the ASPNET and NETWORK_SERVICE user, and the 'admin' user that the Matrix control panel uses full control of the 'c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v1.1.4322\temporary asp.net files' folder, and low and behold the translations on the CataLooK store now appear correctly!!

The CuteEditor I am using on my DNN sites now also behaves a lot nicer, and the flash files that I had on my sites which were very sluggish before and slowing the rest of the site down, are now super smooth!

I've just tried a clean install of DNN 3.1.1 on a new domain, and ALL of the modules are there!!

I urge anyone who has had the 'missing modules after DNN install' problem, to try this solution, as you will probably find it fixes a load of other problems you've been having with your sites.

If any Core member is reading, it might be worth putting this information in the documentation somewhere.

I've had the EXACT same problems that all of you are describing. I THINK I may have found the solution and I posted it on Hsphere (customer only) forums but have yet to receive a response on whether or not it is the correct thing to do...

On my Windows boxes, I added the 'settler' group with modify access on the C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\Temporary ASP.NET Files folder. After doing that ALL of my DNN (3.1.x) installations were 100% successful and I saw NO errors on installing any 3rd party modules.

As far as I know there are at least three key indicators of a failed install due to permissions on HSPHERE platforms.

1) Install looks successful, but when you go to the default homepage, there is NO default information posted;
2) Many default core modules are missing INCLUDING Text/HTML...
3) After adding the Text/HTML module manually and adding the module to any page/panel and trying to upload an image using the WYSIWYG, you get "Your permissions do not allow you do upload images." error

Also, if you log in as HOST and click on Log Viewer in the Admin menu, you will see a General Exception error in red for every module that failed installation.

Can anyone please try adding 'settler' group on their Windows servers and post a reply on the results? Please note that 'settler' is a security group that all Hsphere usernames are added to on Windows servers (thanks amd_duron!).

Have you noticed any other strange behaviour on any of these installs?

What I have noticed is that as more and more modules and content are added then things start to go 'flaky', i.e., setting of permissions by security roles (when there are more than 10-15 roles defined) don't seem to stick to either modules or tabs after an Update is applied (Newly set permissions not being retained in 3.1.1 modules and tabs - http://forums.asp.net/1061460/ShowPost.aspx )
or large HTML/TEXT modules (i.e., >2k in size approx.) don't retain certain HTML formatting when Update is applied.

Little things like this have me concerned because what's the point of getting all this content in there if you only have to reinstall somewhere else? And there is currently no easy way to migrate a complete DNN portal between different servers/hosting providers easily. (Disaster Recovery, Upgrades, Relocations ... So does anyone have any idea WHY this happens. It has happened to me for over 40 DNN installs (all of them 3.1.1). Every single, single time I have to go back and re-upload the same list of modules. It makes installing the instances very difficult to 'automate'. I have been trying to build an auto installer for my clients to quickly and easily get a default build up and running quickly, but instead, I get a new support ticket EVERY single time, and we have to go in a manually upload all the same missing modules. You can clearly see the error message in detail if you go directly to the log viewer and look at the list of general exceptions right after you install DNN.

Thanks, and I hope someone gets a solution to this difficult problem soon.

I resolved the problem easily. The first installation of DNN 3.1.1 doesn't installs all modules. You have to reupload all the module ZIP files to install/module folder and run the URL for installing the modules. It will work fine.

Our experience has shown that everytime this has happend to us, under DNN3.1.1 at least, even after we have reinstalled the core modules that were missing and after reinstalling other modules that showed errors the first time they were installed (but seemed OK the second time) once more and more content and modules and security groups have been added the portal starts to behave 'strangly' and inconsistantly.

I have experienced the same problem with missing modules in 3.1.1, but all I do is go in as host and then go to the module section and add the missing modules. They install and I am good to go.

I also faced this problem when I installed DNN 3.1.1 for one of my customer. After fighting for nealry 3 days, I installed the previous version which works like a breeze. DNN team should release products after strict quality control measures. This will help us to avoid problems which are sometimes hard to fix.

I am having the exact same problem. I can install a copy on our Application/Development server just fine (all modules, no errors), and on a client's web server. But on our Web Server (which has H-Sphere as well {may be irrelevant}), it appears to have installed everything correctly. The page loads and there is nothing on the home page and every module that runs a SQLdataprovider script does not install. I get the following error in the log viewer for each one of these modules.

I can manually install these modules, but I have noticed that other modules down the road are buggy as well. I also just tried using the default dbo user on our SQL server, and it didn't work either.

I set Full permissions on the folder (and push them through to all children) for ASPNET and NetworkService.

The really strange thing is I can use the same SQL server from our Application server instead of the Web Server, with the same dB User (dbo rights, but not the default dbo user), and everything still works fine. I only have the install issues on the web server (using any SQL server... I've tried 3 so far.).

I have the same setup:
Win 2003 Server
IIS6
SQL Server 2000
Hsphere Control Panel... (but it doesnt matter if the folder is in Hspheres root or not)

Any ideas?
