There's no compelling reason to continue to use VB when C# is just as good a language.

If C# is as good as VB.NET, then there is no compelling reason to STOP using vb.net either. It was used, because it was based on a VB.NET project from MS (IBuySpy), so it was compelling to continue using vb.net, and would have meant reinventing the wheel, possibly introducing flaws by porting it to C#. This continues to be true with each and every version.

Personally, I create modules in C#, which creates NO obstacles whatsoever, so I find ZERO need to convert any core code. Since DNN has started incorporating third party components into the core when they are compelling, I suspect you will see DNN grow in to a mix of VB.NET and C# projects in the future. Language really is not a barrier in dotNet, so it is even remotely conceivable that you will see modules for any language that has a free compiler if the case is compelling enough (MS's new build system will increase that possibility since it means you could even use languages not directly integrated into VS.Net - yes, unlikely but possible)

I realize this is probably going to degrade this thread into a pointless flame war... but I think it is important that I clarify the Core position on this topic before folks get the wrong idea about our posting guidelines...

The DotNetNuke public forum has posting guidelines which are very clearly stated in the "Getting Started" Announcements section of this page. These guidelines were created nearly 2 years ago following an unfortunate dispute over a hybrid DotNetNuke code base and were formally published to ensure the future integrity of the DotNetNuke project.

DotNetNuke Forum Posting Guidelines

This forum is dedicated to the discussion of DotNetNuke - an open source portal application written in ASP.NET.

For the benefit of our community and to protect the integrity of our project, please observe the following posting guidelines:

*1. No Advertising. This includes promotion of commercial products, non-commercial products, as well as DotNetNuke hybrids being distributed as full source code product forks.

At this point I will have to politely ask the participants of this thread to kindly restrain themselves from the discussion of "SharpNuke" in these forums. Since it appears to be the intention to create a completely seperate open source project around this initiative ( ie. if the focus was on creating a simple C# port, then the namespaces would have been preserved for binary compatibility ) I would recommend that you set up your own open source infrastructure to support your efforts ( forum, repository, issue tracker, mailing list, etc... ). I realize this post sounds rather harsh, but I certainly do not want history to repeat itself ( the incident 2 years caused a great emotional toll on the Core Team and fragmented our emerging open source community ).

Just to be clear, I am not condemning the "SharpNuke" effort. If the stakeholders of the SharpNuke project would like to collaborate with our community in an official manner then I suggest they contact me offline at sales@perpetualmotion.ca so that we can open a private communication channel on this topic. We are always open to discussion and we often find that third parties will focus on a single aspect of the project ( usually technology ) without considering the larger political/logistical context. There are certainly acceptable methods for supporting parallel open source code bases, but they generally involve trusted and formalized relationships. So at this point, I would appreciate your cooperation in terms of observing the DotNetNuke Forum Posting Guidelines. Respecting our community policies will surely go a long way towards future discussion and collaboration.

It seems to me that what I am still missing is a .dll:
'SharpNuke.WebUtility'
In SharpNuke\controls\SharpNuke.WebUtility there should be a dll in the bin folder, correct? I tried to build the missing dll from the files in the sharpnuke.webutility folder it and the build was ok, even got the damx dll.
When I added referances to the new dll I still get the same errors. Maybe someone can email me the missing dll?

Will need this to proceed. Rest is fixed.

I'm afraid I've Frankensteined my local installation to the point where a zip of it wouldn't represent the distributed package though. Otherwise I'd send it to you.

Will c if can get my wife out with the kids so I can get some quite time and see if we can get this sorted out tonight.
Any pointers are aprciated. Or if someone has a working version, compiled and ready maybe they can make a download for it?

If someone makes working version downloadable I will get it tonight.

SharpNuke\controls\DotNetNuke.WebControls and SharpNuke\controls\SharpNuke.WebUtility are in the archive(s) that I downloaded.

Much as I dislike the "looks okay on my end" reply, that's all I've got right now...

Thats it. I'll try to upload a more recent version soon. But keep in mind, this is a developer version in an early state, far away from production state. So any help of developers and testers would be welcome.

Sorry Mark, that is precisely the point.

You have not provided any compelling reason to use C# either.

One day, in your lifetime, the Universal Language Translator will allow you to communicate with any Swahili tribe, regardless of which PDA they are using. Most notably, using a processor embedded in their sword, they will take your image and propagate your sole to the entire tribe.

I just love this nonsensical debate.

What can I excpect? Will it work out of the box, or is there major bugs not adressed yet? 'Cause I can not see anybugs in yourbugslist.
Will see if I can find time to play this weekend, and take a closer look at #nuke. I belive this will grant me an easier route for
Dnn on Linux.

And with the webfarm/stripped down edition of the original Dnn coming up any day now, what is more natural then asking if and when you belive Dnn 3.1x will be C# ported? Does it excist auto translation tools good enough to make the most part come true, or is this entirely "hand-made"? Have you gotten a team together yet?

There have been so many points made by both camps here that I start feeling it is about time to look at the end product.

The codebase is published already. Anyone who is interested in further development of this can contact me or also Russel to discuss the options.
