This method does accomplish what you wan to do and the quickest way I can demonstrate this is to ask you to go to the following website and register, then test it by signing in and out and moving between the site and forums. To be completely satisfied with how it works make sure you test with the "Remember Login" option checked and not checked and test with separate browser instances and the same browser instance (new window). http://www.gameserve.com.au

Please remember and respect that the site constitutes a real life active community (if you post try to fit in with the locals there).

Regards,
Steve.

Re: How-To: CS and DNN SSO for Developers

Steve,

I think what I was expecting is if I login to DNN, i would be automatically logged in to CS as well, so it becomes a transparent to the user that it is one application. If I log out from DNN, it would log out from CS and viceversa.

Don't we need to create a webmethod in GetUserByUsername to allow this to happen?

I been testing this and what I am able to do is synchronise the databases, in terms of registration etc..but I can't seem to login and out transparently.

regards
Eric

Re: How-To: CS and DNN SSO for Developers

joswalt,

Thanks for that post, a very interesting read. If I ever get time away from work I would love to set that up and play around with it. Knowing the work it took to get as far as I have, I can only imagine what Dan is going through (Dan, if your reading this - well done!).

Both approaches should really be kept in a development environment at this stage, but having said that I must admit that I have two live sites using the webservices approach. The reason I am comfortable with this is because this approach is not really an "integration". The databases are not altered from the original designs and are only synchronised by the webservice. The single sign on operates via shared keys and cookies. There is no re-architecture - nothing that cannot easily be reversed.

When Dan Bartels releases his solution I may very well remove the webservices from my sites and return them to separate CS and DNN entities - they will run without error. This will place me in the same position as any other developer running live DNN or CS sites wishing to utilise Dan's solution.

Re: How-To: CS and DNN SSO for Developers

You can also check out a blog post by Dan Bartels, who I believe works for Telligent and is working on integrating DNN and CS. It sounds to me like the web service is being called correctly because you have your user synchronisation, but this step contains the crucial stuff for the SSO to work. This basically ensures that both applications are using the same cookie and encrypting using the same keys. Note that the keys are edited in the appSettings section AND added to the system.web section.

Regards,
gsc4.

Re: How-To: CS and DNN SSO for Developers

Steve,

I implemented it and i can add a user in dnn and see it reflected in CS however i can't seem to log in to one and have it login in to another.

I have a site beta.site.com and defined beta.site.com/dnn and beta.site.com/cs and did as you did with window 2003 directing the url to beta.site.com/dnn

any clues where i should look at?

regards
Eric

Re: How-To: CS and DNN SSO for Developers

Thanks for all your help mate on SSO solution.

I plan to try it this weekend.
