When I was a kid my mother would by this wonderful crackers and waffers. By dinner time, they were usually gone and mistery surrounded the fact that no one could explain how they dissappeared... No birds ate the breadcrumbs that lead to my brothers bed. He could not wait, he had to finish them all, invariably all the time.

I wonder why you call them breadcrumbs when they were actually cracker-crumbs.

By the way, for some reason my brother always managed to eat my dinner, my desserts, or any nutritious-delicious meal my mother would set aside for me... and for some other reason I could never be what Cain was to Abel.

Bless my brother for teaching me patience.

Where does the term "breadcrumb" come from?
If you remember the story of Hansel and Grettel, a trail of breadcrumbs was used by the characters so they could find their way home. This navigation style is similar -- not only do you know where you are in your Web page, you also know how to retrace your steps.

Breadcrumbs are often used as an ingredient in caseroles and meatloaf. They can also be sprinkled on salads, though croutons are generally preferred for this purpose. While technically not breadcrumbs, croutons share many qualities with them. If you look closely at the word "breadcrumb" you'll notice that the word itself is derived from the two words "bread" and "crumb" from which it can be inferred that they are crumb-like entities derived from bread. Breadcrumbs are hyperlinks that show the user the pages in the site hierarchy that are parents to the page they are on, allowing them to jump directly to any of these pages.

So, if you are on page "C1" in the following hierarchy:

Home
-- A
-----B1
--------C1

...the Breadcrumbs would be Home > A > B1

A breadcrumb is a thing that tells you where you are.

Look at the top of this post, it'll say:

Source Discussions > DotNetNuke > What are Breadcrumbs?

You can use it to navigate back to any of those levels.

DNN Breadcrumbs (Actually SolePartMenu breadcrumbs I believe) tell you where you are in the menu structure.

DNN > Modules > Free Stuff

etc...
