As you configure the portlet Vignette Web Connector collects username, password, field names and url to POST/GET. It also gives you an option to always use the same username/password or let each user personalize it.

On a similar note, we've dumped the AFE for Vignette Portal, skipping Vignette V7 upgrade and will cancel our maintance agreement on Vignette CMS in favor of DNN. The cost savings is too great to pass up.

Thanks for the kind words, but folks should realize that you originally wrote HTMLFeed and Clem Messerli provided some additional modifications as well. All in all, a good team effort.

FYI, I have updated the DNN 3.0 version of HTMLFeed a bit more as there was an unexpected change in behavior running under DNN 3.0.11. The update fixes a problem whereby only the last instance of the HTML fragment was being found regardless of the Match Index setting. Should work fine now.

The download on the our site reflects this update.

Thanks a lot Tom - you're one of the guys that I look up to in the DNN community.

I'm not sure what features can be added to the module. Since most of the settings are used to create a regex on the fly, I'm sure that I could add support for regex strings for power users. Authentication would be nice, but since the http://username:password@www.server.com syntax is invalid with recent IE patches, it's tough to support.

I'll grab the code and try to chime in on the support posts more often!

Doh!

I forgot to put the updated ASCX files in the installation zip. My appologies. The source download has them and you can replace them yourself until I can redo the download later today.

That's why PowerReports Pro goes through betas and lot's of testing while the free modules get created and offered quicker but along with it comes more opportunity for mistakes. Sorry about that, I'll get it updated today.

Great to hear you still have some interest in it! :)

I have ported the basic basic to DNN 3 as I did for DNN 2 and posted it here.

Both the PA and the Source are available for free here. Mike, go ahead and take the source if you want and go nuts with what is not much different than your original module. Like you said, it was so simple of a module it has certainly stood the test of time as long as it can run on the new versions.

I've been looking at an upgrade of HtmlFeed from the original version I posted way back in the dark ages of DNN. I've been focussing more on other modules, but I'd certainly like to add some features to HtmlFeed that would make it more user friendly.

In fact, HtmlFeed is a nice and easy module (no provider support is really required), so anybody could do a port to DNN 3.x without worrying about extra functionality.

HtmlFeed relies heavily on regex - if there are any extra functions required, now would be a good time to bring them up.

Well, That's an easy one. :)

It is currently running only under DNN 2.1.2.

We will look at doing a quick port to DNN 3.0 once the RC is released. Nothing fancy, just porting functionality to run under DNN 3.0

Any thoughts to updating HTMLFeed to run under DNN 3.x? I tried to upload it under 3.0.11 and got the following message:

There are one or two commercial modules that do HTML scraping like that as well as the free one that we updated to run on DNN 2.1.2 called HTMLFeed. I think it may do the basics of what you are talking about.

The others you mention could be nice. Just note:

Weather modules already exist for DNN (Various developers)
SiteMap already exists (Speerio)
Content Managment (Possibly through Advanced Publishing system from Byte on Snowcovered)

Outlook stuff (Exchange) not a bad idea.

I also work with the Vignette Portal at work. And one of the nice features that the WebConnector has that no one is talking about is the ability to pull tables from other sites into your own portal and look seemless. So in a sense its like having an RSS feed, but its not an RSS, just pulling table tags and its content and throwing everything else out. This would be a great feature to add as well.

Also, here are a few other modules that Vignette has that would be really nice in DNN in an enterprise enviroment...

-Outlook Email Module (All Pulled From Exchange Server)
-Outlook Calendar Module
-Outlook Task Module
-Outlook Note Module
-Outlook Contacts Module
-Weather Module
-Content Management System
-This has many modules that tie together.
-Content Viewer Module

I am thinking out loud here but in theory it should work. How about you make a modified iframe module that nor directly uses the iframe , does an xmlhttpcal and in that call pass username and password and url and refering url ( javascript function to get the referrer, or the ip of the user that is browsing)

In the xmlhttp call ( to another aspx page or whatever ) you check if the username and password match and if the referer is correct ( so you can only call it from that dnn page or machine ip or iprange) and then you fill the iframe with the content you just received so another url is loaded on the iframe and the login password credential are passed

The external app ofcourse needs the same type of check also so if username and password match and the dnnpage or user iprange is allowed as being able to call thispage then do autologin based on url credentials

Then you have an iframe filled with external app and passed user credentials, this hould work I think ;)

Gmail uses this in there compose email and spell checking functionality

I am not aware of one however I did just have a thought. I know it's hard to believe. ;)

Xmod module allows for, I believe, "tokens" for Username and password of the currently logged in user. It also allows for the Xmod form to be HTTP Posted with that information to any URL or values passed via the URL line to any URL. While the security risk associated with doing this is something for the implementor to deal with, the ability to do that may already exist.

the only thing that would not exist, again just my understanding so far, is that the form could not be made to automatically submit to a URL. However with some clever javascripting I believe you could cause an automated submit ofo the form to occur upon loading the form.

Just a thought and nothing more but perhaps worth investigating further if true security "integration" is not an option and instead passing the credentials, albeit nont secure in my mind, might help some folks out.
