extracting dll file

Hello,

I'm currently supporting a web application which has been built in .net using visual basic as the programming language. I only have access to the .aspx pages, I believe the .aspx.vb pages have been compiled into a dll which I have access to. Is it possible to extract the files of this dll, make a slight ammendment to the code on one of the web pages and build into the dll again?

Should I keep xml files in the Bin folder?

I'm reading a tutorial on reading and writing to/from an xml file. They say to put the file in the bin directory for this tutorial.

I'm wondering where I should keep some of the various xml files that will be used in some future projects. Should they all go in the bin folder?

Below is a list of the purpose of the various xml files I plan to use. Can someone please recommend the appropriate locations for these with in my projects? The purposes vary so I'm guessing the locations may also vary. I want to start off on the good foot by using good habits with this. Thanks in advance for any help with this.

- xml data file

-xml log file. There may be more than one. They will be used for logging certain operations, logins, errors and browser info....etc

Should the xml data file go in the app_data folder and the log file in the bin folder?

Hi Everyone

How do you configure the profile? I know how to add the names to the properties but where does the names get stored or extracted from? does it get/input the data from the ASPNETDB.MBF that is created when you use create users using the asp.net configuration? or do I have to create my own database store user information like first name, last name, email and address.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Cannot view the .aspx page ! (Runtime Error)

Ht there. I created a .aspx page with ajax extension and I upload the AjaxControlToolkit.dll and the othere into the bin folder on root. But I am still failing the view this page on browser. I keep getting the below error;

Is there a way to only copy over the web.config ?

System.Collections.dll Libarary

I have developed a set of custom object classes which utilize interfaces within the System.Collections namespace. When deploying them in a win app environment I have no problems. When implementing them in asp.net environment the utilizing webpage's response gets hung-up (like a timeout). It doesn't throw an exception or do anything period. Is this because the normal ISS environment does not deploy this assembly, and therefore i need to add it to my bin or is their another known reason. I've tried two different asp.net hosts, with the same result. thanks.

This is what i put into the Web.config

Error in New Server

Hi,

I have an AJAX Enable ASP.NET Application which works perfectly fine from my computer's IIS and in a Web Server I had set up for it. However, in a new recently configured web server to which I deployed the same web application, I am having certain issues mainly related to AJAX, Validation Controls, and Regular Expressions. I have installed in both servers the same version of AJAX and the .NET Framework, and I have not clue of what the problem could be with this new server's configuration. Can anyone please help me with this?

i building wbsite using asp.net with c# as codebehind language. i have some files in vb which i am using as reference.

when i am running my website in localhost its running perfect,but in online server it is giving me the below error

What are some practical examples to use with the Application Settings in the config file?

I am watching a video on configuring, building and deploying asp.net apps. They use the application settings to store a key value pairs and then assign it to the text property of a label. This is functionality is really cool but I am trying to figure out some practical examples where this is a good technique to use. I especially like the ability to change this value with out having to rebuild the app. One possible application for this that i have been able to think of is a commission, penalty or interest percentage that may change relative frequently.

What are some other common uses for this feature?

Events of Global.asax not fired on webserver "Application_Error"

Hello guys,

i was performing url rewriting on my asp.net application.

i google and found a technique that in Application_Error event handeler of global.asax we can find the wrong Url and redirect to a correct page by server.transfer and sending some query string with it.

I done the same thing. i used Application_Error event of Global.asax and checked if error occurs then redirect it to a known .aspx file with querystring as some part of url

But i m facing a problem in it.

This code totally works on local server on my PC. but when i put it on my webserver. it just absultely failed.

I fouund that the events of global.asax are not even getting fired.

So what should i do .

problem with new section in Web.config and master page

Hi.

I'm writing a project which is composed of two separated subprojects, one for presentation and in second there is domain model + DAL (data access layer). In the first (presentation) subproject, in Web.config I have added a new section with my settings. The classes derived from ConfigurationSection and ConfigurationElement I have in the second subproject. The problem is that, my master page can't recognize the new section in the config. I think, the solution is to 'show' him the namespace where my derived classes are. Am I right? How can I achieve that? Or maybe there is another way to do it?

i have been created a web application in asp.net 2.0. it works fine on local machine but

when i uploaded it on web server it supports asp.net 3.5 it give me this error:

The type or namespace name 'DatabaseUtility' could not found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)

DatabaseUtility is a class store in app_code folder.

i think this is a permission issue application can not access app_code folder but not sure please help me.

Questions about deploying and the config file.

I am going to be deploying my first app soon. I know of a few things in the config file that need to be changed before the site is deployed or published. This includes things like the custom errors and the compilation section. Does anyone know of a checklist or article that discusses the things that typically need to be changed in the config file?

Can I easily change the config file with out rebuilding the solution or creating a new assembly once the site is published to my host. I'm hoping I can in case I make a mistake. Any advice that someone may be able to offer on this would be greatly appreciated

Deployment without service interruption

Hello,

I'm currently working on an ASP.NET commerce application, that naturally implies big concerns about continuity service during the deployment process.
We are working with a Microsoft NLB Web Farm made of 2 servers, which is sufficient regarding the number of clients we have today.
My question concerns the impact of this material architecture on the software architecture. My predecessor didn't separate ASP.NET code-behind and HTML code (he put everything in the same page), but he told me, he did that so because it was the only way to avoid client disconnection during the deployement process : when he copies the aspx file (code + HTML), ASP.NET automatically recompiles the application and that remains transparent for the client.
My question is : Is that true ? Is that really no way to perform a deployment without disconnecting clients with a full continuity of service ?
If I shutdown IIS on one server while deploying, there is a failover mechanism which ensures the site remains available, but active client requests may be aborted, which is unacceptable.
What do you think about that ?

Best Practices when working on a live ASP.NET site???

I had a question about best practices when working on a live ASP.NET site specifically when you are changing class files in the App_Code folder. We all know that when you make changes to those .vb files your application resets and users sessions get reset. Is there any way around this other than a big Under Construction / Temporary down time page. Right now (call me crazy) but i just work on our live website directly and yes I know that is foolish but that is the only setup they had for me here. We are redoing the entire site and with the new stuff I will certainly be setting up a SVN and my own sandbox but that still doesnt answer my question of how to properly modify the live pages.

Auth Ticket Timeout & Session Timeout

Suppose I have an authentication ticket with timeout="30" & slidingExpiration="true" and I also have <sessionState timeout="30" /> under web.config.

Now, correct me if I am wrong but both of them should expire at the same time if a user becomes idle after logging in, correct? So what happens when a user is logged and he/she is not idle? How / When does timeout for both are reset? Lastly, if a user is on a page (i.e. questions.aspx) with bunch of controls that do not postback, is that considered as user bing idle as far as slidingExpiration is concerned?

Getting Error when opening web form in browser

I have IIS set up and I'm trying to make my ASP pages available to the users over the network, but I'm getting an error. The login page opens correctly, but when I click the login button and it tries to access the SQL Server I get the error:

An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\DATA\Database.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I'm using MS SQL Server 2008 Express. Does anyone know what my problem may be? Thanks.

w3wp problem (deploying web application to production server)

Hello ppl,

I am having a annoying problem here which, although I can live with it, it would be better if there was a solution for it.

What happens is, I am trying to deploy my web application to my production server, and it is manually copied from another environment we have, when we close the testing phase.

Now, if I try to copy those files to the server, I get an error saying that Windows cannot copy some DLLs as it is being used by another process (which is, in fact, w3wp.exe, which is IIS app pool). I cannot delete the files as well. If I stop IIS, I can deploy the web application perfectly, and then restart IIS, but this is very annoying as it only allows me to publish things to the server at night, in a deployment window, as I cannot stop IIS with users using my software.

Anyway, some times I have to publish emergencial fixes that cannot wait for the deployment window, but today I'm unable to do so without throwing all my users out with stopping IIS.

I want to know if there's a way to update the files (DLLs and ASPX) without having to stop IIS. I even tried to kill the w3wp.exe process, as it would release the DLL but the next user update would recompile the app and recreate the pool, but would give me enough time to place my files in there, but the w3wp simply doesn't get killed if I try to stop the process.

Any ideas on how I can achieve this??w

ASP.Net 2003 / Win XP / Access

I have a web page (page1.aspx), with 2 buttons on it. Both buttons open the same target page (page2.aspx), but depending on which button is pressed, it will populate the new page's datagrid with different data.

On my local computer, it works perfect. I save a Session variable when the button is pressed, and that's how I know which data to load on the new page. When I upload everything on the Hosting server (seekdotnet), it's not reconizing the session variable. I've tried changing it to use cookies, using the "page2.aspx?value=xxx", and even storing info into the database.... But for the life of me, it is not working at all.

The weird part is that other session variables and cookies are working fine between the different pages... it's just this page that is causing problems.

Any ideas why this one page would be causing problems???

What are the different methods of deploymnet for asp.net project ?

After deploying the asp.net project if we modify a single aspx page ,do we need to deploy the complete project or can we just put the modified aspx page in the project.I do not want to deploy the complete website again for simple modifications.How can we achieve this ?
