Can you host websites on Windows Home Server by standard? Specifically ASP.NET ones of course.

Also, what is the minimum spec system you need to host a few small to medium sized ASP.NET websites?

Hey everyone-

I am going to be developing a web application with ASP.NET that will also have a windows service to check certain criteria and then send out emails. I am looking at Server 2008 Web along with MSSQL2008. Because I need control to add a windows service, is buying a server and having it colocated the best option? How much CPU/HD do you think I should go with? This will be the only site running on the server. I have been looking at getting a server with around 8GB of ram, 4 500GB drives in raid6, and dual Xeon CPUs. If this does get bigger, there is always the option of going with a blade server. I think I might run VMWare ESXi at least so that moving it over is easier.

Any suggestions would be great!

Now can i host this domain on a free asp.net server, i dont need much database and stuff access, just the nomrla server side scripts.

NOTE: I know about Brinkster.Net and although they do offer free asp.net hosting but you got to use a subdomain, we cannot use our domain with a free account.

Please help me.

I 'm about to sign up for some shared hosting space. My apps are going to be created with the version 3.5 SP1 of the .net framework. I'm not sure what version asp.net I have, it's the one that comes with VS 2008. The sites that are going to be on the hosting space are my personal projects for my portfolio.

The hosting company offers both Server 2003 and 2008. They said that my apps would run on both of them fine. It's a shared hosting plan, so I have to use their interface to manage the sites. I want to later feature AJAX on some of the sites as well. I may eventually use WCF for some of the sites. I'm assuming this will work on both 2003 and 2008. I will follow up with them on this to be sure.

I am wondering if I should choose 2008 over 2003. I am thinking about going with 2008. I'm guessing that for what I'm doing and since I can't access the Server environment or IIS directly that it really doesn't matter too much.

Does anyone have any thoughts or opinions on this?

Anyone have significant experience in performance between Hyper-v vs Virtuozzo? In evaluating the performance as a web server with a few sites plus a sql database what would you choose if the cost is roughly the same between:

- Virtuozzo based Win 2008 64 bit 4 GB RAM

- Hyper V Win 2008 64 bit 2 GB RAM

Please advise any primary thoughts / considerations between the two alternatives.

How does email in my site affect my hosting space, or does it?

I think I understand this correctly, but I'm hoping for some clarification or correction if needed. I am wondering if having email for my site will have any affect on my shared hosting space's bandwidth and or space allowed for my site.

Let's say a site has email that uses something like "User@theirDomain.com" for the email that is done with system.Net.Mail. I'm wondering what will happen with the mail messages if the user hasn't connected recently and if this will have any affect on my hosting space for the storage of those messages until the user connects.

My understanding is that it would not affect my hosting space. Any messages that are waiting to be delivered or sent will be sitting in a que on the the appropriate server. This appropriate server would be a smtp, pop3 or imap server depending on if it is outgoing or incoming and which of the incoming servers they have(pop3 or imap).

Is the above correct?

Would the messages sitting on the smtp server waiting to be delivered(using the scenario above) be sitting on my hosting spaces smtp server? Thus not directly affecting my hosting space? And if it doesn't get delivered then it will eventually just be returned to the sender.

Hi all,

I have 3 databases made in ms2005 and my hosting company has mssql 2008 installed...

i have created the databases in the hosting company and i restored the newly created database at hosting company's server with the backup file (.bac) that i created locally with my sql2005....

Now when i try to access the database via my website,

one database gives me this error

Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to failure in retrieving the user's local application data path. Please make sure the user has a local user profile on the computer. The connection will be closed.

when i try to access the second database it gives me this error

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40

when i try to access the third database it gives me this error

Login failed for user 'Username'.

I am using this connection string

question regarding redirect

I'm building a site for someone that currently has a site. This new site will be replacing the old site and it will use a new domain name. The new site is not going to be hosted on the same server as the old one. It is going on some shared hosting space.

I am trying to understand how a redirect will work in this situation. I am going to get the people to put a redirect up that points the old domain name to the new one in the new hosting space. Will I be able to use the old domain name with out a redirect in the old hosting space if it is still registered with my client after while? In other words, is there a different or more permanent way to get the old domain name to point to the new one that I can do and control myself instead of having to rely on someone else?

How do I get the dns to resolve to my new site?

I am going to be putting a site on some new hosting space soon. My client has gotten a domain name for this site. I am wondering what i will have to do to get their new domain name to resolve to the new hosting space. What information will I need from the people that they got the domain name from? Or, what information will I need to provide them?

Is there any thing else I will I need to do to get the DNS to resolve correctly?

I have followed instustructions:

To Grant Administrator Privileges to an ASP.NET 2.0 User Account

Log in to your Account Manager.
In the My Products section, select Hosting.
Next to the hosting account you want to modify, click Manage Account.
In the Databases section of the Hosting Control Center, click the SQL Server icon.
Next to the name of your SQL Server database, click Open Manager. The SQL Server Web Admin tool displays.
In the tree on the left, expand the Connection folder and select Connection.
Enter the User Name and Password for your database. You created your user name and password when you set up your SQL server database.
Expand the Tools folder on the left and select Query Analyzer.
Copy the following T-SQL statement into the Query Analyzer window:
SELECT RoleId FROM aspnet_Roles WHERE RoleName = 'Administrators'

Click Submit and save the return value for use in step 11. Click Reset.
Copy the following T-SQL statement into the Query Analyzer window:
SELECT UserId FROM aspnet_Users WHERE UserName = '<username>'

Replace <username> with the user name of the account to which administrator privileges will be granted. Retain the single quotation marks around this case-sensitive value. Click Submit and save the return value for use in step 11. Click Reset.
Copy the following T-SQL statement into the Query Analyser window:
INSERT INTO aspnet_UsersInRoles (RoleId, UserId) VALUES ('<roleID>', '<userID>')

Replace <roleID> with the return value from step 9. Replace <userID> with the return value from step 10. Retain the single quotation marks around these values. Click Submit.

However everything seems to go as expected, however, when I login on the site, I still do not see the admin pages. (Am I actually logged in?)

Again at wits end. Why is this so complicated? Could anyone give me a tip? (I am a beginner...;) )

Also trying to get the email working (in web.config and tried several suggestions I found in the forum, but also there, no success yet! Do I need to make changes to any other files?( I want to let user register on the site and receive an email to activate them)

really hope someone can help, really appreciate all the input on the forum.

Does anyone know of a Web hosting provider with full SQL Server capabilities? I have used one specific one that I like but I can't publish my own SQL Server database without using their proprietary tool. I have copied a sample wedsite from ASP.net - the one with the "Classified Ad" website and it uses the real SQL Server and so I need a host that can support it if I write my own site using SQL Server.

Hi All

Just a quick question really about a little project I am developing. My site uses SQL Server 2005 currently but it requires a huge volume of diskspace due to photos being stored on the filesystem. I could easily see 750 gb being consumed quickly.

Being based in the UK I have looked at hosting the site dedicated with 1and1 but they don't provide SQL Server for the DB. So although I would like to host the solution with 1and1 I am having trouble with the database side.

DiscountASP within their Datacentre in the UK support SQL and I was wondering if it would seem crazy to keep the DB on the DiscountASP side and talk to SQL between them and the 1and1 hosted site.

My gut feeling is this is a crazy idea due to networking, performance but I cannot find a reasonbly affordable host which will give me plenty of disk space and access to SQL.

Any help would be much appreciated.

My requirements are as follows

1. be able to upload/download ms sql files (.mdf) directly. (don't have to go through several steps and charge any more per upload/download).

2. asp.net 2.0

3. be able to upload/download .dll files directly. (don't have to go through several steps and charge any more per upload/download). I use

code-behind class, so a web host is no use for me if .dll files cannot be upload/download.

4. can host my own domain

5. have a clear user guide showing the exact steps to upload/establish the whole web site ( instead of a collection of random unclear guideline)

6. below $20/mo, and don't charge any more about anything (like upload .dll etc)

7. prefer a web host like www.aspspider.net, www.aspspider.net is good and free but it cannot not host custom domain.

Any suggestion will be appreciated. Thank you

GoDaddy, sending mail via Google Apps

I am trying to configure my web.config file to allow for me to directly send messages through my Google Apps account, rather than via GoDaddy's SecureServer System. Below is my web.config file. There are 2 scenarios when you try to submit the form:

1. Try to put e-mail with any domain other than @yahoo, @gmail, etc…domain i.e. support@mydomain.com to e-mail field

2. Try to put i.e. somerandomemail@yahoo.com to e-mail field

EVERYTHING WORKS UNTIL you put to the e-mail field any of @yahoo, @msn, or @google e-mails

According to the godaddy support “Unfortunately, addresses at @yahoo, @msn, or @google e-mails are blocked because these providers do not accept form mail from our servers. There is no way around this beyond changing to a different email “

It’s ridiculous!!!!! Is there any reason why @yahoo etc do not accept formmail from godaddy? What if I must use formmail, should I tell the visitor DO NOT USE @yahoo etc…. ? I haven’t seen it before…..
