Actually we are uisng a user control and deriving it from WebPartBase . Will Ajax toolkit resizable Control be helpful to resize the webpart?

You can resize the WebPartZone instead since the WebPartZone size will automatcailly adapt to the size of the WebParts which has a greater width.I used SplitterBar control for resizing the WebZone... SplitterBar is a FREE and stable third party control... see below for demo

If you are going to allow the user of your website to resize the web part then it is quite difficult and you shouldn't go down that path. Try to evaluate alternate solutions.
